entitlement to housing and council tax benefit

I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to whether it is worth me putting in a claim for the above.

OH earns £16198 before tax
we have 3 children
I am currently on maternity leave and getting £123 a week.
we have childcare of £23 a week
we also get £648.66 a month tax credits
I beleive as from nov child benefit is not classed as income
My rent is £97 a week and council tax is £114 a month

If not now do you think I will have any entitlement once my materniy pay ends in Dec?

pop your figures in the link above.

    :D
  • Thanks for the link DX2 - I have entered our details on there but am still none the wiser. According to their calculations we should get £800.00 a month tax credits not the £650.00 that we actually get. Also because they use my annual income including maternity pay we are not entitled to housing benefit/council tax but I believe these benefits do not use your annual figures to calculate entitlement.
  • My situation is not far different from yours and we get Housing benefit but no council tax benefit.
OH is on 17 k per annum, we get £520 roughly per month CTC £23pm for WTC and we have 3 children

It would depend on the size of your house and they would assess your rent to make sure it was within reason for the local area.

It may be worth putting in an application, youve lost nothing if you get a no! :)
  • Thanks - I think i will apply and see where it gets me. Only wish I had of thought of it sooner !!

I did think that was the case - I will apply now anyway and if I am not entitled I will reapply when maternity pay ends in Dec.

The forms look like so complicated though!!

Just looking at the form - if my only income is the stat maternity pay do I enter 0.00 under the earnings ?
  • Hoping to become a SAHM and every penny will help
  • Well I applied but am entitled to a big fat zero. However it looks like when my maternity pay ends i will be entitled to something. However my question is would I then have to put a complete new claim in or use my reference number from this claim and advise a change in circumstances.

You will need to submit a new claim form, but it would be helpful if you could also quote your reference number from your recent claim.
  • Luckily didnt have to submit a new claim form - just had to provide proof of when my maternity pay ended and any change to tax credits. Just waiting for my new tax credit assessment but they have given me a month to send this off. Fingers crossed x x x
