New car / new private plate

Hello
Im in the process of buying a new (used) car and a new number plate. What would be the quickest way to allocate the new plate to the new car?

Thanks

  • Where you buying the plate from? a company? they will do it all for you.

If doing it yourself, when you have all the paperwork & fees pop along to the local DVLA office & sort it all out there & then.
  • if you're buying the car from a dealer and the car has not yet been registered...give them the certificate of entitlement with the reg on (issued by DVLA) and they will assign the plate straight onto the vehicle upon first registration (they use a V55/1)
;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)

  • dont fit it too quickly, if the car turns out be be a heap and you wanna get rid of it, you have more messing about to do

i would wait at least a month or so
  • thanks,
the car is not brand new...
i will buy the private plate from the DVLA

I was wondering if I have all the paper work for the new plate I need the vehicle reg document to allocate the number plate to the car but as the document is with the dealer how can I register in a quick way the number plate to the used car at the same time as the vehicle documents is being sent to the DVLA to be registered in my name?
    hope it makes sense! :o
  • You could ask the dealer to give you the V5 (in good faith) and explain thet you have a private plate to go on.
Failing that, if it's already been sent off then you will have to wait upto 6 weeks for it to come back in your name, then you can send it off again for the plate transfer thingy.
  • thanks Harvey :)
