I won a trip to Sydney!

Ok, so i entered a competition and won a trip to Sydney for ten days some pearl jam tickets, spending money, and a stay in a 5* hotel!

I wanted to ask, what are the 'dont miss' or 'must see' things in Sydney? I'm going in three weeks i only found out on monday so i'm a bit exciteable! Also, if anyone knows, whats the shopping like in Sydney? Is it cheap? I say this because i went to NY a few years ago, and things that were £50 over here, was $50 over there making everything an absolute bargain.

don't miss the Pearl Jam concert... get to the front, get crushed, and enjoy..

    the rest, is a bonus!
  • Congratulations you lucky duck!

Some of the best places to shop in Sydney include The Queen Victoria Building - in the middle of the city, lots of independent shops etc and a beautiful building. For quirky local gifts The Rocks is great. There are also lots of markets which are good fun and great value - Paddington and Glebe markets spring to mind.

    Have a great trip!

We last went about 3 years ago when the exchange rate was much better in terms of getting more $ to each £ and then it seemed like most things cost more or less what they did in the UK once you did the conversion. So I'd assume that now things work out a lot more expensive than then.

Oh, and contrats on winning the competition...what a great prize - Australia AND Pearl Jam tickets...fan since 1991, though only saw them once in concert - 1994ish. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • Unfortunately for you with the way the pound is Sydney will seem quite expensive.

As someone else has said in central Sydney the main shopping area at present is the QVB but it isn't cheap (they are rebuilding the other main shopping area at present).

As for where to go in 10 days, I would say the zoo, cocktails at Australia Square at sunset (around 7pm at present), ferry to Manly and ferry between circular quay and darling harbour. Bridge climb if it is your thing (but it is expensive) and a wander round the botanical gardens (find the bats). If the weather is nice then a day in the blue mountains will be pleasant (recently it has been sunny 2 days and rainy 5 days each week).

You'll probably be landing early in the morning, try and stay awake all that day (at least till early evening) then you'll minimise the jet lag.
  • brillant winning a prize like that!!

Congratulations, luck you! I love Sydney.

I was last there 3 years ago and didn't find it any more expensive than here but as wanttobeasaver says the exchange rate isn't great at the moment.

Cocktail bar in the Shangri la hotel has the best view of the harbour, it opens at 5pm and is popular. The drinks aren't cheap but the view is! We went there after we got married in the Botanic Gardens.
