    Hello durain

This is one of those 'how long is a piece of string' type questions.

What will be lovely and warm to one person..........will be sweltering and hot to another.

The only advice I would offer is, to buy the best quilt you can afford. A goose down quilt will be warmer (and more expensive) than a goose feather and down quilt.............with the added bonus of no feathers working their way out of the quilt and scratching your skin.;)

    Regards

  • My 4.5 feather and down quilt is nearly as warm as my 7.5 holofibre one. To add to nile's tip - squares are better than channels for some but others prefer channels so they can shake the feather and down filling to the bottom if their feet are colder than their top half.

I have one of those two piece affairs, with something like a 9 tog 5 tog split, so you can add them together in those cold winter nights...works just fine for me.

As others have suggested, if you can afford it go for one of those winter/summer join together numbers. Much more versatile. It's not just the heat you need to worry about it's the weight too. My OH has a 15tog feather duvet on the bed (all year through I might add! ) Not only is it far too hot for me but I also can't move once it's over me! Have a bizarre feeling that I'll never escape... :o On the other hand although I always sleep with the window open, a 4.5 down duvet is fine all year through, although I do chuck an extra 4.5 one on if it's *really* cold. So it just depends on what you like.

Depends what you like and depends how cold your room is.

I have a square sectioned feather&down duvet, and have been really annoyed to find recently that the sections have little holes in the divisions so the feathers have manged to migrate to the four edges!

and also a feather 13 tog is much warmer than a manmade 13 tog.

No where is cheap for a good goose down one as I researched this earlier this year and eventually went for this one from Ikea.

I love it though, and its as light as the proverbial feather :)

Earlier this year I bought an all seasons goose feather & down duvet from Ebay. There are a couple of major suppliers of bedding selling on there with good quality items at very good prices. Hopefully it's ok for me to mention here that the people I bought from are greens_of_bournemouth & I can recommend them.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I have real problems with adjusting to temperatures thanks to poor circulation, but surprisingly a cheap man made fibre quilt I bought from the Linen Warehouse has done me proud through all seasons so far! It's 13.5 but I find it warms up very quickly and evenly in winter, but doesnt bake me in the summer. It's so good I just bought a double version for mine and OH's new flat :)

Totally agree though, with quilts everyone is different!

We bought a "summer and winter" goose feather and down quilt in House of Fraser. It was reduced from £120 to £60 and they were having a "10% off day" so that was down to £54. It's a 9 tog quilt plus a 4.5 one. Find 4.5 good for summer and always have a sheet (pure cotton) under the quilt so that if it is really hot during the night you can throw off the downie but still have a sheet over you. The 9 is OK for winter - wouldn't like anything heavier/warmer than that. It just drapes over you. Sectioned into squares not channels.
