No need to disable the hardware firewall, just install the software firewall of your choice.

If you really need to disable the firewall find out your default gateway by going to:

Start | Run | Type CMD | Type IPCONFIG

Then type your default gateway in your browser as a web address, e.g. http://192.168.2.1

Then you will be at your routers admin interface where you have the option to turn off the firewall.

If your problem is that certain programs do not work as the firewall is blocking them then look at port forwarding (google is your friend).

The hardware firewall built into the router is very good at stopping unwanted incoming traffic. It will protect all of the computers on your network in one go.

You could also install any software firewall you like on any of your computers. These will help block any unwanted outgoing traffic from the computer it is installed on.

A hardware firewall in your router, and a software firewall installed on any computer on the network will work fine alongside each other, and is probably the best way to go.

Okay, in this case its is becuase of the ports, turning the firewall off wont sort the problem. When you get a router it lets all the computers use the internet via one ip, so if a computer wants to use a port on that ip address, you have to give it permission aka port forwarding! if you search on goggle for port forwarding there is a website that you select your program and router and it gives you insructions on how to do it :-)

    Thanks Tom :-)
