Student Jobs?

Firstly, make sure you enrol at the campus job-shop. They usually have the most accomodating employers that take on students. As an example, you can get some cleaning jobs that only need you to work a few hours a day...do that and you've got your rent covered with a few quid in your pocket for a pint at the end of the week.

Secondly, have you thought about doing tours for your university? (I think they call them 'student ambassadors' or something - pretentious or what!) These are a good source of easy money, but work is pretty intermittent (you can do 3 tours in one day then not have any more for a few weeks). This can be a good or a bad thing depending on what you want to make. From what I hear the pay is pretty damn good for what is essentially having a chat to people about what you get up to during the week. I think at my uni it pays a flat rate of about £10-£15 for each tour of about an hour.

Another thing to think about IS juggling your studies. Ultimately you're there to get your degree and could make more money eventually by devoting your time and energy to studying and getting a better grade, rather than knackering yourself out by working and letting your grades slip. I have seen people failing miserably because they were so tired from working, but on the other hand, some of my other friends manage it pretty well. Personally I make my money temping over the summer because I like to have some sort of a social life while being at uni. You've gotta consider this too, as it's a massive part of being at uni and developing yourself as a person.

One last bit of advice....Drink Carling not Stella, buy Tesco's own brand food and smoke cheap, imported rolling tobacco and you won't go far wrong.

Ok, just realised that may be that's a bit off the question, but thought I'd get it in as someone should find it useful. Here's my experience:

So what do you do? Temping during the summer filing at Ernst & Young. (Mystery shopper during term time)
Full/part time? Temping - FT (MS - As and when)
How's the pay? Temping - £7 p/h, overtime is time and a half and double on Sunday (MS - £10-£20 per visit)
Enjoy the job? Filing's a bit annoying but MS is fun.
Comments? Temping - Annoying but brings in the cash. MS - Fun but basically just beer money.
Best job you ever had? Mystery shopper! Getting paid for having a 'critical pint' :)
What's the easiest job for the best pay? Seems like it's one or the other.
How do you juggle your studies? With the mystery shopper, you work when you want.
What's the max hrs per week you can cope with? Wouldnt recommend any.

So what do you do? Financial Consultant @ big bank in call centre
    Full/part time? Part Time
    How's the pay? £10,903 (£8.97 an hour)
Enjoy the job? Start on Tuesday - ask me then!
Best job you've ever had? Shot !!!!!! in LA for a couple of months in 2003
How do you juggle your studies? I treat study like a jobi n itself - 9am-5pm and only work for money in the evenings.
What's the max hrs per week you can cope with? As many as I'm about to do - 24 per week.

How did you apply for that/find out about it? Do you need much experience to get a job like that?

So what do you do? Test Centre Administrator (for the driving theory test, IFS banking exams, barclays, LNAT tests)
Full/part time? Part Time - flexible hours.
How's the pay? £8.11 an hour
Enjoy the job? It can be a bit boring at times, when envigilating you are not allowed to do anything but watch the candidates/CCTV. Every day is different though and we have a good team that we can have a chat with.
    Comments?
Best job you ever had? Probably some of the web design stuff I've done - I did a website banner advert for a client - took about 15 minutes because they were happy with the first draft. It's something I really enjoy doing and I recieved £50 for the work.
What's the easiest job for the best pay? Test centre is pretty easy really, although there's always the risk that an upset candidate may kick off.
How do you juggle your studies? I struggle. Other things tend to come before my studies. I know they shouldn't but they do.
What's the max hrs per week you can cope with? It varies - my job is flexible in that at the start of the month they ask which days I'd be interested in doing.. I'm contracted for 11 hours a MONTH, but usually work 1 or 2 days a week.. I probably do about 12 hrs a week on average. Some weeks I might do 20+ hours, others I might not do any. I couldn't do any more, but I also do web design and stuff as well as my degree.

So what do you do? Call centre work

    Full/part time? 14 hours a week

How's the pay? Good- £9.39 an hour

Enjoy the job? Sometimes. I'm on the complaints team at the moment; some days it's enjoyable when I solve people queries but other days customers won't be happy no matter what I do and I feel like i'm banging my head against a wall :wall: :rotfl:

Comments? They let me change my shift frequently to fit around uni and let me book holidays at short notice, very understanding employers. Plus I go full time every holiday so it saves the hassle of looking for summer jobs etc. I've been there 7 years now, I started there as soon as I finished my GCSEs.

Best job you ever had? Mystery shopping.

What's the easiest job for the best pay? As far as student jobs go I reckon mine is pretty good.

How do you juggle your studies? Juggling's the right word!

What's the max hrs per week you can cope with? I was doing 25 per week, then 20 and this year I dropped to 14 to concentrate on my final year. I would have liked to have quit altogether for my finals but my empty bank account wont allow it. :D
    Debt at 1/5/09 £21,996 _pale_
Current debt- 0 :j Final payment made October 2012. :D

Where do you apply for jobs like that.

I've just done my first year without a job. Loan and overdraft gone. Definately need a job next year. :o

Have a read of this board- http://boards.fool.co.uk/Messages.asp?bid=51534 on the fool website. There are lots of different companies to sign up with, I mostly do jobs for Gapbuster or Retail eyes.

I'd recommend signing up for a few, it takes a while to register and start receiving offers of jobs so if I were you I would sign up over the summer so your ready to go in September. The only thing is that it isn't regular work and with some companies you are classed as self employed so you would have to fill in tax forms each April (although you're unlikely to earn over the threshold so you probably won't have to pay any tax).

How's the pay? £5.75 but commission is at least another £1 an hour at the moment. Should get even higher in the summer.
Enjoy the job? Yes - It's not always about the money. I learn a lot there and I get to help people and practice French occasionally on them as well!
Comments? Quite tough sometimes and can be frustrating, but good working conditions
Best job you ever had? eBay - £60 for half an hours work (if that)
What's the easiest job for the best pay? eBay - same as above
How do you juggle your studies? Saturday more or less devoted to work because I'm at VI Form and the shift's 5AM-2PM
