Corsa 1.4 16v - Water pipe replacement and new cam belt

My mate has a 1996 Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 16v. He had a leak from the bottom of his car and took it to a garage earlier today to get sorted. They said it was a burst water pipe and that it would need changing. Fair enough, But then they also said that its dodgy changing the water pump without changing the cam belt. Now is this true? Sounds like those 2 components would be completely unrelated. I'm a dunce when it comes to mecahnics though so thought I'd ask on here.

All in all he ended up paying £230 for a new cambelt, water pipe and labour. Is that a lot of money? He's already got it done now so nothing he can do if it is expensive etc... but just thought I'd ask out of interest. Seems like a steep price to me for what was originally a water pipe replacement.

Thanks everyone.

The water pump runs off the cambelt. When you change a cambelt and tensioners on a 1.4 16v Corsa it's much more preferable to change the water pump at the same time. The 1.4 Corsa engine is notorious for it's plastic tensioner failure. £230 isn't unreasonable.

Very much not unrelated. Should be changed at the same time because they require essentially the same, considerable, labour whilst the parts are relatively cheap..

Ah brilliant. Thanks very much everyone. As I said I'm a mechanic novice so really wasn't sure. I'll tell him he got a good deal :)

And in reply to Hart, yes they did thanks. Ended up with a Ford Focus. Doesn't exactly match their original criteria but they 'saw it and fell in love' as my mum said. How anyone can fall in love with a focus I'll never know :p Thanks for asking :)
