blocking 090 numbers

Our landline phone is routed through AOL?,for the bills etc,all we pay BT is line rental,My father god bless him is 83 and has started to be lured into dialling premium rate numbers to get bits of cheap tacky jewellery for his great grand kids.

we explain that these calls cost £10-£15 pounds a time and is a con,so he says OK no more,BUT,with his altzheimers he forgets then gets caught again

Is it possible to 'block' the phone so he cannot dial any 090s
as you can with BT

Phone BT and ask them to block calls to premium rate numbers, they will do so at no charge.

Calls are going through AOL, so BT cant do anything about it.

    Whoops, missed that bit.

    Don't AOL offer something similar?

The Phone Guard does block them automatically (it only allows through what you program it to allow through).

If you're quick, there's one up for auction on ebay this evening.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

cheers for your help, but we were trying not to make it so obvious, managed after trawling for an hour to find this, hope it helps someone else

Yes. AOL Talk can set up selective call barring on your phone line, which blocks calls to any of the categories listed below. The AOL account holder (the person who holds the master screen name) can arrange this by contacting Member Services.

The following selective call barring options are available at no extra cost from AOL Talk:
    • Premium Rate Services barring (bars outgoing calls starting with '09')
    • International number barring (bars outgoing calls starting with '00')
    • Mobile number barring (bars outgoing calls starting from '077' to '079')
Please note: this does not include 'personal numbers' (which allow you to divert all calls to one number) starting with '070'.
You can contact AOL Broadband Member Services between 8am and 12 midnight, seven days a week on 0844 499 5555* (from outside the UK , dial +44 844 499 5555).

Great - but the problem may then turn into one of trying to stop him dialling 100 to get the operator to connect him (which would be even more expensive).

The Phone Guard would stop that too.
