ntl digital box - strange problem.......

Hi folks
Just wondering if anybody can help with this problem.
I have an ntl digital box (Pace) and a DVD/VCR combi. Recently, whenever we are watching cable, we have have had to switch the combi off, because we get the sound from whatever channel the combi is set to. (Strange - looking at Friends and hearing Corrie!!).
Also, if we try to record something from cable, there is no sound at all.
I phoned ntl up a few weeks ago as part of the cable box had broken. I mentioned this to the person on phone and she 'reset' it (or so she said). It was ok for a couple of days then went back. When the guy came out to fix the cable box, I mentioned to him too, and he just says 'yeh, sometimes that happens'. Great service eh? Anyhow, I don't want to be phoning them every other day to have it 'reset', as it costs money now.
Anybody got any ideas whats going on here? All the scarts and plugs are in their proper places, as they have been checked.
I feel like cancelling it but I have phone/broadband/digital and can't be bothered with the hassle of changing it all.

1st thing you could do is go to sky
lol
reset the whole lot up. put your STB through scart 1
DVD combo through scart 2 and it should be ok aslong as you dont have mixed wires. I suspect its a mixed wire thats causing thisNever do things tomorow when you can do them today.0 -
I have telepest and my pace box does exactly the same. When we use our DVD player we have to make sure the STB is in standby or we can here the faint sounds coming from the STB channel.
Not found a solution for it as yet, but it doesnt take alot to put the STB into standby.0 -
Sorry to be thick, but what's STB?
mclaren, I would like sky too, but I think you need a dish and our housing association won't allow them on the walls. I will try changing the leads around when I find out what STB means!!!
I know it's not much of a hassle to switch the combi off, but there are three tellies running off this set-up, main one in living room and one in each of kids' rooms. You can imagine the arguments. What confuses me is that it worked fine up until a couple of months ago and nothing has been changed, that's why I'm thinking it's a fault at their end.0 -
STB = Set Top Box, your pace cable box.0

With the HA, what you can do is get it on the roof, on a chimney stack - or failing that, you can get a dish at your window, as it is in your house, it will be allowed. Or you could even try play dumb and say you have ordered sky and you didnt know u needed permission, and that sky advised you to get written permission. they might do it?Never do things tomorow when you can do them today.0 -
Stick with cable, I hear sky are reducing the quality of some channels to fit HDtv in.
Thats nice of Sky....
Look into alternative box's to run cable. The pace box's cable companies supply are rubbish. Slow, unresponsive, ugly.

Jeez, how obvious is that - Set Top Box - thanks
Have to go out now, but will try tonight/tomorrow.
Re the HA, it's a definite no. Other folks have got dishes and they have been told to take them down, no matter where they are on the building. I am on the top floor of a tenement building, the only access to the roof is through loft which is locked and alarmed and only HA have a key so that is not an option. They actually had a firm run cables into every building a few years ago, stopping outside each door so that if you wanted cable or whatever, everything was already in place.
Was looking at Freeview, but I don't think I will get the channels I want with them. Must have another look.

i`ve had problems recording from sky. was the program without sound a NEW sky movie ???, if it was this is due to sky (possibly cable company) being able to stop you recording new movies. this has happend with the terminal and other new films  :mad:2015 wins £4.00 not mse:(
2014 £44.00:mad:2013 £83.00 2012 £601.50
2011 £1554.50 2010 £698.00 2009 £2793.00
2008 £2816.00 2007 £1034.000 -
No it's not just recording that's the problem. To watch a cable channel, the vcr has to be set at that channel too, or I get the sound from whatever channel it is set to. A real pain, as kids watch cable all the time (in their rooms) and I want to watch BB.
I tried changing the leads around but no joy. Think I will phone them up tomorrow and complain.0
