Insurance company mistake

Could anybody advise?

I recently sought both buildings and contents insurance on-line and completed over the phone.

The quote was agreed and my payment details were given and payment confirmed.

A couple of days later and the buildings policy arrived, two weeks later and no sign of the other policy.

I called and it was confirmed that the remaining policy transaction had not been completed by the call centre agent.

Unfortunately no sign of the recording of the phone call either.

Took out a contents policy and they appologised and said that they would have looked favourably had I made any claim if the contents gone up in smoke.

Has anybody else experienced this? have they broken a verbal contract and if so how do I prove it when they have lost the voice recording?

Maybe I should just put it down to experience, but I'm a bit miffed that dispite their assurances had I asked them for a 40,000 pound claim I'm not sure they would have paid, also I have policies that finish on different dates now, therefore added inconvenience and probably added cost.

What would you do?

Many thanks.
