Can I record a meeting without telling the other person?

There may of course be some company policy which actually excludes the use of recording devices and so to use one would be considered a breach of the rules.
Anyway I hope the OP got on okay0 -
I have successfully used covert recordings at tribunal as long ago as 1985.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0

I must say hothothot that made for fascinating reading and stand duly corrected. I had always been led to believe covert recordings would not be accepted in a UD case. Very interesting...0

Had the meeting, feel like I've been through the wringer. Emotionally exhausted.
I'm glad I recorded it. I haven't had a chance to check the quality yet though. The meeting covered pretty much everything we would go through at the formal review meeting, but the senior manager kept insisting that it was still informal - with added threat that he hasn't yet decided whether he will allow it to go to the formal review.
I just wasn't properly prepared for it and wish I'd had the union rep there to protect me from some of it. On the other hand, with senior manager's insistance that it was informal, I don't think I could have brought him.
There no direct threats, but a lot of time was spent pointing out my flaws with some extremely negative feedback from my previous line manager. Somehow she forgot to mention it in all my previous monthly meetings with her.
My main challenge to my mid-year rating was that no one had given me any indication that there were any problems with my work. As I said, all year I've had monthly meetings with my line manager to talk about work and how I'm doing, so when I got a poor review, I was honestly surprised and contested it. I feel like they're doing the same thing again, by ambushing me with this horrible write-up.
I think I'm rambling now...
Thanks for your help everyone.0 -

The easiest way to get an admission is to present a verbatim transcript of any recording, the opposite number is faced with accepting that transcript as a true and accurate account or allowing the recording if they wish to challenge. It helps if you can get an affidavit of support to it's accuracy from a solicitor/legal representative or Trades union official.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -
I nearly forgot to say... I don't think I'm the first person who feels a need to record their meetings with this manager - as I was getting ready to go for this meeting, I mentioned where I was going to the guy I sit next to. The first words out of his mouth were 'Have you got a dictaphone?':rotfl:0

sometimes they ask you to leave the room whilst they discuss the matter - remember to leave your jacket there on the chair, recorder on inside pocket of course.
Sadly this forum is honeypot for HR types and probably read quite widely - they might start doing searches before going in - in that case I will update the strategy to concealed places they arent allowed to search.
Well win this - lets turn big brothers tools of surveillance right back at em0 -

When I was involved in disciplinaries we would leave the room to discuss things so no chance of over hearing our discussion!0
