Hi guys

Me and my girlfriend are FTB's and we are hoping to move into our first house on December 10th

Currently property has both gas and electricity with Scottish Gas (British Gas) on a pre payment meter

what i am wanting to know is how easy is it to switch from current supplier to another supplier and get a metered meter installed ( hopefully at no cost)

obviously we will have to live with the current meter till the new year, just hoping its not going to cost too much

  • Can you not ask your buyer to get it changed over as a condition of the sale?

I think there is a charge of around £200 mark (but I could be wrong!)

Most suppliers will credit vet you. If you have just moved into a property BG/SG will charge a security deposit of £200 and £300 if you fail the credit vet as they have no history with you.

Some suppliers will change the meter for free, whilst others charge (About £50 -£70). I'm pretty sure Scottish gas will not charge.

However, they will probably wish to credit check you first and that might result in you having to pay a security deposit and/or pay monthly by DD (or they may refuse you a credit meter)

They won't do anything until you have the keys and set up an account with them. Then it normally takes 2-3 weeks to change the meter (if they agree to do so)

If they don't agree, you could try contacting other suppliers to see if they will change the meter for free in exchnage for you giving them the business.

so my best bet is to move in and just use pre-payment till i can switch to someone,

ideally i would want to pay monthly fixed DD for both gas and electricity

previous owner has died and its the family who is selling it.
