Hi I am on the dec 2009 tariff which ends on the 31st Decenber and have been informed by a call centre staff member that I shouldn't do anything about changing until the 31st December as I will be charged a cancellation fee and my answer to her was I most certainly will be seeking out different suppliers prior to this date as it takes a couple of weeks to cross over. Am I correct with this as I don't want to sit tight until 31 Dec and they then put me on standard tariff...any advice would be appreciated x shrewdal

I think BG will put you on standard tariff by default if you don't arrange something else with them.
Obviously, if you plan to switch supplier, ensure whatever tariff you go onto has no early exit fees. Standard tariff has no early exit fees, but nor do may of their other tariffs.
If you decide to go ahead and switch, I would leave this until at least the end of the first week of December. Any switch will take a minimum of 28 days, but typically a little longer.
Yes it may mean spending a few days on BG standard tariff (or whatever lower tariff you can find they offer), but it's better than spending money on early exit fees. The extra cost over just a few days will be minimal.
If you leave switching until 1 Jan, you could be on their standard charge for typically 4-6 weeks which I understand you may want to avoid."Now to trolling as a concept. ....
