rent is taking up 40% of my incomeI pay £90 a week for a one bedroom flatthe job is basically just pottering about on a computer.
Not wanting to criticise your career or domestic choices or anything, but you take home £200+ and spend £90 per week on rent? There are cheaper studio flats on Rightmove. Perhaps you should be looking at changing jobs and moving.Been away for a while.0 -
Is there any sheltered housing available or social housing that's solely for the over 50s, retirement housing? Where I am, there are warden supervised properties for the over 55s, - this type of accommodation is not the same as care homes, many are available that offer accommodation to those without support needs.
There's definately some housing in your area.

Why don't you call round the places in the areas you are interested in, to get an idea of the cost, application process, minimum age and qualifying criteria? Contact your local council to find if they've got any transfer schemes or info on this. Contact all the local housing associations as some of them run this type of accommodation.

See if Shelter have a drop in office in your area and book an appointment or contact them by email through their website. They can talk through your options, which shouldn't require you to do anything drastic, like move to IOW...
I'm not really sure you are ever going to get accommodation for less than £90 pw - where I live, that won't even get you a dodgy room in a dodgy house in a dodgy area.

Squatting? Living on a boat? Living in a motor home? Joining a new age community? Living in a yurt? Being a guardian of vacant property?

The main stumbling block to your accommodation problem which sees so much of your salary spent on rent is your low wages. Get a better job?0
