Going just over the credit card limit

I have just checked my statement and from what I can work out I have been charged for going £4 over my limit.
I pay by direct debit and have this as one of many cards most I do not use and this card has a low limit.
I seem to have gone over the limit just 8 days before my direct debit date.
Can anyone advise me i.e. how bad will this affect my credit score and is there anything I can do it seems a bit unfair I am always in credit and this is a very small amount.

This is unlikely to make any real difference to your credit score, if any.

If this is the first time you've gone over limit, speak to the card company and they may waive the fee. It's not unfair as such, as you really need to keep an eye on your limit, especially if it's low.
  • Thanks and yes i should have kept an eye on things I will admit that and will be doing so from now on. When you sugest speaking to the credit card company who do you ask for or do you just call and talk to the first advisor?

For something like this any customer service advisor will usually be able to help. It depends on the company, but a lot of them will help out on your "first offence" if the account has previously been maintained well.

Why shouldn't it affect your credit score? shouldn't it be the same thing as going over your overdraft limit?

The credit card companies report the balance at various points - depending on what point of the month they report it, it could be back within the limit.

Late payments show, but overlimits often don't.

My Halifax Aqua card was overlimit one month - it was reported on my report as having a balance of £366 and a limit of £350 - however the following month, this data has dissapeared and replaced with the following months data. They reported the month as a [0]

The overlimit should only affect your credit score during the month (or the month after) you committed the offence. After that there should be no record of it happening on your credit file.

This could be just down to the way the information is presented on the consumer version of the credit report.

The balance / limit is logged month to month by them for years.
  • Whats the best way to check my credit report and if somthing is going to show, will the problem show now or later? when is the best time for me to check?
