can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative to decking?

we have a waste bit of area in our garden thats perfect for a sitting area. we priced up decking (from builders yard) and it would cost over 300quid!!

does anyone have any other cheap alternatives?

it has fence on two edges so wont need any fancy railings etc...
want to get it done soonish as the weather is so nice! at the moment it is a pile of garden rubbish

You could clear it,put down weed supressing membrane and then use gravel,or even cheaper, bark chippings.

Gravel is what sprung to mind for me as well.

You could buy a few paying slabs so you have something solid to sit a chair on and fill the rest in with gravel.

Cheap and cheerful and looks presentable.

I am thinking of a cheap way to do the back garden as it's bobbins. Gravel is no good for me with 2 kids though, I'd be forever sweeping it up and replasing windows, lol. I'm thinking of paving it and B&Q do nice flags, but someone said 'ooh, you don't want to get them from there, they are so expensive, try a cheaper place' ...any ideas of a 'cheaper place' anyone?

have a look in your local classifieds adtrader etc there are always patio slabs going cheap when people buy to much for the job they always have some spare worth a look and cheaper than b&q

I have seen slabs offered on Freecycle lately, you could join your local group.

You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.
