in Techie Stuff
I’ve spent a while trawling the net looking for a really cheap laptop. Only need it for general day to day stuff which mainly involves surfing the net. Built in wireless would be nice but not essential. I’ve come up with these two and was just wondering what people think.
Acer Aspire 3003LC AMD Sempron 3000+ 256MB 40GB CD-RW/DVD 15" LAN XP Home.
or
Toshiba Satellite Pro L20 - Celeron M 370 1.5 GHz - RAM 256 MB - HD 40 GB - DVD±RW (+R double layer) / DVD-RAM - 802.11b/g - Win XP Home - 15" TFT.
Now I know the Toshiba might be a bit slower than the Acer but aren’t Toshibas supposed to be fairly well built?
Anyone got any opinions on either of these two ?

six of one..... really
for day to day (I presume that means a bit of word etc) and internet stuff, you should consider a memory upgrade on whichever one you buy , as that will have the biggest impact on your user experience with a lappy of those specs"If you really want to hurt your parents and you don't have nerve enough to be homosexual, the least you can do is go into the arts."0 -
What do you want the use for? And look on the amd website to find out the real speed of the sempon 3000+
Thanks Tom :-)0 -
Yeah, I would probably order another 512MB with the laptop. Sempron 3000+ is about 1.8 GHz I think.
Your right by day to day I did mean word, and surfing, watching DVDs etc. Plus some development work, Visual Basic and C++. Nothing too heavy.
They are both coming out at about £370. The Acer was from Ebuyer, can’t remember where I saw the Toshiba. I'll have to dig that link out of the browser history.
Just everything I have heard was that the Toshibas are a fairly good build quality. Just didn’t want to end up with some fisher price looking laptop.0 -
The best thing i would recommend if your looking for build quility, is going down to a store and attualy looking at them and see what you think

If you're not in a rush then you might want to consider waiting until Dell do another free delivery offer. After following advice from people on this board I got a laptop from them that would suit your needs for just over £300 delivered.
Depending on who you buy from you should be carefull of upgrading memory. It's likely to work out much cheaper buying it elsewhere and fitting it youself.0 -
Yep, went in PC world last week for a quick look. Might have to have a better look around the shops tomorrow.
Just seen a reasonably priced Acer in Tescos too, £400 with DVD-RW only 14" screen, widescreen though.
I’m just to indecisive.0
