Hi there,
Is this any help :-
Changing the indexing options
Select Indexing Options in the Control Panel to change the indexing settings. This window shows how many files are already indexed. New files which are added to the already indexed folders will be indexed automatically as well. To achieve the best search results, it is important to let the system know which additional folders to index. To add (or remove) folders to the already included locations click the button Modify, button Show all locations and select the folders to index. If the folders with personal files have been moved to a different location/partition, add the new location to the folders to be indexed as well.
The button Advanced offers some additional settings, like rebuilding the index (if there seems to be a problem) or moving the indexing location (the location containing the indexed information, which is useful in case of restoring a system image). The tab File Types makes it possible to include and/or exclude certain file types. The page optimizing the Windows Services tells how to disable the search feature in case it is not used.

I don't get this at all!!
Why are you typing msconfig, cmd, regedit etc in the Search box??
The Run box is all you need.
You say regedit, works from the Run box, can we assume the rest work from the Run box too??
I don't see what you are expecting the search box to say if it doesn't ask you where you want to search for files?0 -
OK! when i first had my laptop running vista i was able to type a in regedit, cmd, msconfig, or any run box command and it worked, but now for some reason when i type any of these (or any command in-fact) it just goes straight to ''search results in indexed locations'', and yes like you said i can get to these locations if i use RUN box its self but why has this happened and if this has stopped whats saying something else isn't wrong. its just a bit strange how something that was working fine one minute has just stopped altogether. all i want to really know is has anyone else had this, or does anyone know how to enable the start search to find these commands again.0

What do you mean "it worked"?
Are you saying you typed msconfig in the search box and msconfig opened?? or did it search the computer for the file called msconfig??
Why would you want to search out the file in any case??0 -

OK to put it bit more simple anything i type into start search does not get found all i get is ''search failed to initialize'' where the searched files should be, and i just get directed to ''searched results in indexed locations'' window. and yes when i typed in msconfig in or cmd or regedit and so on they all worked but now they don't.0 -
