"Wearing glasses makes vision worse"

My Hall"mates" are trying to convince me that by wearing glasses all the time, I'm actually making my eyes worse - I can't see out of my left eye if I don't wear them. Does anyone know how true this is? They're also trying to convince me that I'm wearing the wrong glasses - anything stronger and I can't see, anything weaker and I'm wearing "duff" lenses. (ones which are 0.00)
They're also trying to tell me it's pointless me wearing glasses because they don't correct my main eye problem - which is true; but they do correct things such as short-sightedness and astigmatism.
One of them, her mum is a doctor and therefore, supposedly knows everything.

Well if you walk out in front of a car by not wearing your glasses you won't have to worry about such things.
Seriously, do you need advice on this? They're idiots who know nothing. Ignore them0 -
Stuff 'em. If you've been told you need glasses by a professional optician (I'm not a medic but I believe opthamology is an entirely separate discipline from medicine generally, and either involves taking a totally different degree course or an add-on to the normal medicine degree), then that's the advice you should be taking, not from some know-all 18-year-olds.
I'd also strongly advise that you hang out with them as little as possible, and instead socialise with people from your course/that you know through societies."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
I think it sounds completely daft. I would get terrible headaches if I tried to go without glasses.
I wouldn't take any notice of the mum who is a doctor. Doctors are often a bit clueless about anything outside their particular speciality. That's why doctors will usually not give advice on dental or optical problems. I used to be a first aider and you won't believe the amount of doctors who admitted they could not remember how to give CPR. One doctor even asked me why I couldn't just leave an unconscious man lying on his back!0 -
Definitely continue to wear your glasses!
As a comment on the heading of this thread: I've had the exact same prescription for my glasses since I started wearing them 20 years ago, so my vision definitely hasn't got worse from wearing them (although to be fair, I only started wearing them regularly when I started negotiating traffic and didn't want to get run over through not seeing the traffic properly!)0 -
are they qualified opticians then?
it depends on what your optician said when you got your glasses doesn;t it. If they said just for reading then you probably don't need to wear them all the time. If you need them to see generally, then you probably do need to wear them all the time.0 -
Most eyes naturally become worse with age anyway, so your damned if you do and damned if you don't! But wearing them can reduce the degree they become worse by.
If you have an astigmatism (eye ball is an odd shape- your optician will tell you if you have this) then your eyes will never get better.
Naturally your eyes do become more long-sighted with age (unless you have the above problem)and so short sighted people are the few that have eye sight that can improve with age.
Wear your glasses! They were prescribed for a reason!0 -
Fact - how much, or how little you wear your glasses has no effect on how your eyes will change in the future. If you are concerned speak to your opticians but I'm sure they will tell you the same. Wear them as you personally prefer. (I am an Optometrist)0

But surely if you've been prescribed glasses and you don't wear them, you're straining and damaging your eyes trying to see without them? I wear glasses full time and get terrible headaches if I try read anything with them off. Also, squinting is highly unattractive!
I don't really understand why your friends are so bothered if you wear your glasses or not? What's it got to do with them?0 -

complete rubbish ive worn glasses all my life and if i didnt have them i wouldnt be able to see a thingReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0 -
Barmy! Who cares if her mum's a doctor, when it comes to your eyesight it's only your optician you should listen to

I have noticed that my eyesight gets slightly better when I haven't worn my glasses for a while, but I think this is just a case of your eyes depending less on your glasses. When I was at school and refused to wear my glasses things weren't quite as blurry as they used to be when I did wear my glasses 24/7- but I imagine I was still squinting all the time, and catching buses was a right struggle
Not at all worth it, unless you're not particularly short/long sighted in the first place.0
