Mercs from that time weren't the most reliable cars ever built, and this is an 8 year old 'budget' merc... How much?
Eidt - quote from parkers re. reliability:
Check the comments on Parkers website owners reviews. Plenty of problems, nothing consistent, but Mercedes-Benz must be very concerned.0 -

i cant think of the model off hand but it had wooden trim inside. 44,000 miles. £3850 give or take a few hundred what do you think?:footie:0 -
The first gen A-class (1998-2004) is generally considered to be a terrible car!
Dangerously bad handling especially on motorways, lacks Mercedes reliability but still requires Mercedes service costs. 12th from bottom out of 137 models in 2003 Top Gear survey... worryingly i could go on, avoid!0 -
...
Are they expensive to repair?Which year is a 51 plate i guess its 2001?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Definitely avoid the 1st Gen A-Class. It's the worst car the company has produced on reliability and quality.
For example, if the starter motor fails, then it's a sub-frame out job to access the starter motor - which will cost you around £6-700. On a normal car the cost will more likely be around £150-£250.
The gearbox and air mass meter has an ECU built in which often goes kaput. It's possible to remanufacture the air mass meter with companies such as BBA Reman for around £300 or pay around £1k at a dealer for a new one.
Another major problem is that independent garages don't have access to Merc diagnostics and you are often tied to a Merc dealer with a car that is a banger. My local Merc garage charges £150+VAT per hour. The man without a signature.0 -
Friends of ours had one.
Expensive!! They had something to do with the airbag go wrong and MB wanted £1k+......0 -
thats a shame i like them. Back to the drawing board.:footie:0

How about an audi a2? Similar price and more reliable than the merc.0

The honestjohn website has good info on used cars. Here's his report on the AClass
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=230
In summary he says
NOT RECOMMENDED. MY RECOMMENDATION IS THAT YOU DO NOT BUY A MK 1 A CLASS
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
For Merc owners, I would ad that there are good indepedant Merc technicians/workshops who charge fair rates and dont fleece you as main dealerships may.0
