    Hi there,

Have you reviewed your contract yet to confirm that you should be on SSP? Worth checking as they may just be trying their luck, hoping you'll just accept it as correct.

Also, I'm pretty sure that there is law in place with regards to how long you should receive full pay for when signed off sick. A minimum time period. I could be wrong, but worth checking.

I think there are a few HR people on here who could offer some sound advice on how to deal with this. I'll go see if I can find one for you :)

There is no legal requirement for any employer to pay anyone sick pay other than SSP which is less that JSA and all the associated benefits.
  • good advice above and I would get advice and start a debt management plan with CCCS. They will help show your creditors what you have and keep back money you need to live on.and step by step there will be light at the end of the tunnel....There is hope and a way out ...
all the best....its horrible to be in this situation I know

Interesting point about work related sickness (including stress) detailed in the above link.

May be worth you looking into, I don't know. Something like that could cause more stress. That's a decision you will need to weigh up and decide if it's right for you and your circumstances.

By the way, big hugs for you! *HUGS*

  • Hi,

I've looked at my contract, and it states that I will receive COSK (Full rate) for 2 weeks in any 12 month period and anything after that is at managers discretion. So he's basically decided its tough luck. I'm getting all my details etc ready to speak to everyone who might be able to help. And now I'm going to have a look at that link (Thanks euronorris)

    Thanks again to everyone!

  • Hi, just to update, I have spoken to tax credits, and they are adjusting my payments. I have to call back when I go back to work or the end of December if I'm still off. Hopefully this will help me a little bit. I still couldn't get into the job centre though, so I think I'm just going to harass them until someone sees me.

I'm still going to apply for housing benefit, and see if they can can help, as well as see if I will be entitled to a crisis loan.

And I've managed to spend the £20 I had in my pocket on enough bits to make the bits I had in my cupboard into meals that should last :-) (I just have to find containers I can freeze portions in - I'm sure I'll have something somewhere)

  • Well, I have 5 minutes, so I think I'll update a little bit... I'm having a very confusing few days... I worked out that my debts have gone up since I stopped spending on my cards; in April, they totalled £8678.67, I cut the cards up in May after deciding there was no point in keeping them if I'm not gonna spend on them (I stopped spending on them in December) and I totalled up my debts again the other day to see how well I was doing, and they now total £9191! Looks like I'm not doing well at all!!!!

Aside from this I have tried to apply for a crisis loan, and I got stuck with some snotty woman, who was really condescending, who after asking me why I felt I was in a crisis situation, and before I finished answering her, she said "We're not just hear to top up your lost earnings because you're not bothering to go into work" then when I managed to explain to someone else, they said I'm not entitled to a loan, because I have available funds on credit cards (they 'recommended' I request new cards as i cut the old ones up, so that I could spend on them)

I'm really not happy, and want a big hole to swallow me up!

On a slightly humourous note, I received a letter from EDF yesterday saying that I weren't paying them enough each month and they would like me to increase my payments to £32 per month in order to catch up with what I owe them. I pay them £20 a WEEK!! So when I eventually get in touch with them on Monday, I'm likely to tell them they're stupid, and they staying at £20 a week!.
