Cannot find driving licence

Hi!
Been very disorganised and cannot find my licence, which I got 20 years ago so in old paper format. I have moved many times since then and cannot remember the last address on it so DVLA have said they cannot help me. I dont want to simply take the test again and apply for a new one as I will be classed as a new driver and insurance premium can soar.
Has anyone had experience of this? Would it help if I went personally to DVLA in Swansea with IDs?

Just follow one of the options on here:

He will probably need to make postal application on D1 form.

I pretty sure they don't ask. I'm ex DVLA but my knowledge is vehicles not driving licence, but the vehicle ones don't ask for it. There are thousands of people in same boat as him so I can't see why they would!

I think they ask for previous addresses. If he can supply those, hopefully one will match up with the records.
(they need to establish which John Smith your brother is!)

Isnt it a fineable offence, not to change the address on your licence straight away?
My hubby got stopped 2 weeks after we moved and he was given a warning and told to change his address to our current address straight away.

I would have thought they could find him on DOB anyway without accurate address surely there cant be that many UK people with the same name, born on the same date0

But then they have security questions to ensure it isn't someone trying it on as identity fraud.0 -

Did he ever change his address (on any licence) at all? If not, just write to the DVLA stating full name, date of birth and old address and request his driver number. That said, did he ever make a note of his driver number? Once you have that, then fill in a D1 with driver number and request for request for replacement licence stating new address.
The driver number is in the following format: BLOGG 706253 JD9XY
where BLOGG is the first 5 letters from the surname, 73 is year of birth, 06 is month, 25 is day, and JD are first two initials. Last 3 digits are computer generated check digits. If you provide as much as you know of the driver number, DVLA should be able to find a match with full name and old address.
His entitlement to drive should still be in place until age 70, but if the DVLA won't play ball with the above, then turning up in person may be your last resort.0 -
