Can anybody give any advice on where to start with investing a large amount of money (140k) , it is all in high interest savings accounts at the moment, my bank are trying to offer me various products but quite frankly i am not comfortable handing my cash over to them. Is an IFA the way to go? I think I may just spend it all on beer!

Wise decision to ignore your bank. If you're nervous about self-investing then an IFA is an option, I like the beer one too.
Where to start with saving is going to depend on your own circumstances. Own a property or have a mortgage? What kind of risks are you willing to accept for a potentially higher rate of return? Do you have dependents? How is your pension provision? What tax-rate do you pay and if it isn't higher band do you ever expect it to become so? Do you need quick access to the money? Are you currently using your ISA allowance? These and plenty of other questions need to be posed before starting to give an answer."The state is the great fiction by which everybody seeks to live at the expense of everybody else." -- Frederic Bastiat, 1848.0 -
I currently rent a parish council property but am now looking into right to buy purchasing which will get me and my girlfriend on the property ladder. Don't know whether the sensible option here is to buy outright or to get a low interest mortgage and make my money work. I have no kids, am in full time work earning about 22k a year, I have a final salary work pension. My cash ISA is maxed out but I have no share ISA's. I like Kronenbourg Blanc which is quite expensive!0
