Baxi Potterton Boilers - Any Good?

Hi,

We desperatly need a new boiler as ours has been out of action for a week now. We've had 4 quotes and the cheapest is £2924 for a Baxi Potterton Promax 28HG combi. The price is also for a new shower, small radiator and TRV's.

Anyone got any experience of this particular boiler? The quotes have come back as Vaillant, Worcester Bosch or Baxi but to a layman they all seem much of a muchness :)

cheers

As far as installers are concerned it is very much down to personal preference / bias / prejudice etc, personally I would go for Vaillant if it were for my own home. However, with the exception of Ideal, Ravenheat, Biasi and a few others, most of the well known makes and models are fine IMO.

It is far more important that your system is cleansed and protected properly. No boiler, however good, will be reliable otherwise.

Go for the longest possible warranty, but be aware you will have to pay for an annual service.

    Thanks :)

It's got 5 year parts and labour warranty and magnaclean on the quote so hopefully should all be good.

Be aware that Potterton Suprima boilers were junk and had a problem with circuit boards failing early.

Whilst it appeared to be a design fault, Potterton/Baxi refused to accept responsibility for all the failed boilers.

Be aware that *if* you get a problem, Potterton *may* wash their hands of it as they have done before.

The Suprima PCB fiasco was sorted out yonks ago, and undoubtedly cost Potterton a ton in reduced goodwill. The lengths this company went to, to deny responsibility and culpability were absurd to say the least.

However, the Suprima is now a resilient and reliable 'B' rated boiler that will last for many, many years.

I would be perfectly confident in installing one in my own home.

I've just had mine repaired, a Ravenheat less than 3yrs old. The engineer
told me they were rubbish and next time i switch should get a
Valiant, Worcester or Baxi / Main / Potterton which are all the same ones.

No! (Pardon my language) they are 5H1T. I also had a Service Contract with HEAT TEAM - they are also 5H1T* (putting it mildly).

Every year since it was installed; it has failed at least once usually at the same time of year - early December; although it was also failed around February. This happens when the outside temperature drops to near freezing. Although it is still above freezing at the moment my Poxi Batterton bolier has stopped working again. I managed to restart it last night but this morning the little red LED was flashing again and I couldn't get it working in spite of resetting the system many times. :-(

*Heat time were closing their lines at 5pm; "so as to not to inconvenience anyone ringing up to report a fault and not getting through"(?).

I'd had enough of this silliness, so when the contract was up for renewal I reluctantly went back to British Gas; incidentally they have promised to visit me on Sunday morning (tomorrow) which I don't think Heat Team would ever do in a month of years. I had to wait 14 days excluding weekends. In fairness I don't know what the situation is now regarding phoning them and how long they take to visit and frankly I don't care.

There is also the matter of the design fault that causes the condensation pipe to freeze up. Baxi Potterton should correct this fault at their own expense to all of their combi boliers. :-[

Am I being unreasonable to expect my heating system to actually work during the winter?

The so-called engineer that installed it suggested that he could connect my shower up to the hot water system. I'm glad I didn't take his "advice" and kept my electrically powered shower. At least I can have a hot shower if nothing else. Only a complete idiot would not want a seperate shower.

! Take my advice: Dont buy Baxi Potterton and don't take a contact out with Heat Team. Steer well clear. COLD TEAM more like! Still I'm saving a fortune in gas. Brrrr.

Once again I am unable to use "Smilies" it kept saying that I wasn't allowed to include links - I DIDN'T INCLUDE ANY LINKS!!!

Instead of the Promax, look at the Potterton Gold HE28. Same boiler, less warranty.
