Car Buying Renting

Hi all,
I'm after some advice about cars!
I am thinking of learning to drive but I won't get much use out of a car. I'd probaby use a car every couple of months to go on a day trip somewhere random, and a couple of times per year to visit family.
To buy, tax and insure a car for it to sit outside my house for most of the time seems a waste!
So I was wondering how much car rentals usually are?
Are there any criteria for renting a car about how long one has to have held a licence?
Are there any restrictions on how far you can take a rental car? (My family live about 160 miles away).
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Different companies have different policies on ages and licence held times.
e.g. Enterprise will not rent to anyone under 23 (advises on their website)
I think you will need to find out which companies operate locally to you have check through their websites and quotes/terms and cons.
You can also do hire car comparisons.
Martins article is mostly skewed towards holiday rentals but should help you out.
