Problem with mobile phone ...

Hi
Please can anyone advise me if I have any rights?
I bought a Samsung mobile phone on a PAYG contract through Orange in May '09. I have only used £20 credit so far so the phone is not used much. However, it has developed some faults - it won't switch off (well, it does but it switches back on again straight away) and the right and up buttons don't work.
I called the shop I bought it from and they said that as it is within 6 months they send it back to Samsung for repair. I can either send it through the shop (by post) or contact Samsung and they will send a jiffy bag for me to send it back to them (both by post). I do not have another mobile and can't be without one so asked if I could have a replacemet and was told no. Is this correct?
Many thanks in advance.

Yes, this is correctSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Yes its correct.
I'm sure you can find someone with a spare unlocked handset and pop your SIM into it in the interim.
Most shops say that over 28d, they must return to the manufacturer.0 -
Thanks for the quick replies.
I will try and find someone who has a spare one I can use in the interim ... or maybe wait for the post strikes to be over before I send it!0 -
I'd go for the jiffy bag option myself, otherwise make sure it's recorded/registered and the post office knows the value of the item.
I've been caught out before posting a phone back for repair which was then 'lost'.0
