Skycard is now Barclaycard and have sneaked the rates up

Hi there,

Does anybody else have a Skycard which has now become a Barclaycard? I got my first statement through this morning and without warning (ok, i'm sure they did somewhere in some small print but i never saw it) have hiked the interest rate up by 2% on purchases and 3% on cash withdrawals. I'm at the £4200 limit on the card anyway so am looking for ways to clear it. What will happen to the interest rates i'm paying if i say i want to cancel it? I took out a skycard, not a barclaycard and don't see why i should be paying extra interest to a company i never signed up with.

Any suggestions oh wise peoples?

-Nicky

SkyCard always was a Barclaycard; i.e. the actual credit card issuer was Barclays.
  • As above - Skycard was issued by Barclaycard and is still the case today.... So the OP did agree to Barclaycard terms - check your credit agreement and at the the very top it'll say 'regulated credit agreement between barclaycard & you'.

  • I was told by Skycard that when Barclaycard "took over", the only difference to me would be that I could no longer earn Skypoints. As this was the only reason I applied for a Skycard in the first place, it all now seems a bit pointless. I am annoyed that the interest rates have been increased on the card and when I challenged Barclaycard about this, I was told that the changeover had cost the company alot and had had no choice but to pass it onto the customer. Great. I have written to Barclaycard to complain about this, but I don't hold out much hope for it to be decreased. I am now going to knuckle down BIGTIME and pay off as much as I can, as well as getting a balance transfer from another card. I was really happy with Skycard and so far I am really unhappy with Barclaycard. I have had to phone lots of times with mistakes on my transactions (something I never had to do with Sky) and have generally had enough. Don't know where Skycard's call centre was, but I always managed to speak to someone who understood me but have had loads of problems with Barclaycard's Indian call centre.

Ahhh, you mean the actual processing of the cards, as opposed to Sky Card branded stationary etc?

It was always dealt with in Northampton, prior to the 'takeover' as such but Barclays tend to ship most processing (cust svs) to India don't they - like most the British companies, funnily enough!

  • Is anyone having problems since their credit card has changed from Sky to Barclaycard? I have made internet banking payments every month, yet the last two (september and October) has not been applied to my statement. Yet, when you call Barclaycard, call centre in India, you can't get any sense from them. I have now late payment charges even though I made the payments within the timeframe. Surely, Barclaycard can trace the payments from Sky as they are part of Barclaycard? Can anyone help?

I had to set up a new internet banking payment anyway as the new replacement Barclaycard had a new account number. Just used the Barclaycard a/c payment details rather than keeping the old Sky ones (not sure if they were actually different).

The reason your APR has increased is unrelated to the card being rebranded from Sky to barclaycard.

It is because they consider you to be a high risk - i.e. showing signs of debt stress. Either through a high outstanding balance, always running the card near it's limit, taking a long time to clear the balance, having large outstanding debts with other creditors, or a combination of these factors.

The same thing would have happened had the card remained branded "SkyCard".

Many creditors are doing this, MBNA are the worst having raised some customers accounts to 34.9% APR despite that customer having run their account within the terms and conditions without fault.

You have the choice to opt out of the increase - that is advise that you would like to clear the debt at the old rate - and they will allow you to do so - but you will not be allowed to use the card any more.

Hope this clears things up :o
