Jumble Sales - my eyes have been opened .....

Well to all you guys saying that you didn't think jumble sales are still going all I can say is "where have you been?"
Don't any of you visit our "Best eBay, car boot, charity shops and jumble sale bargains" thread? I have been a loyal jumble sale patron for over 35 years (I'm in my early forties now) and have never been swayed by the lure of the cheap clothing or the quick fix of the high street. Our local paper advertises tens of jumble sales every week and the halls are packed with people from all walks of life and backgrounds, from the genuinely poor to the naturally thrifty.
My house is packed to the rafters with amazing retro stuff and vintage treasures picked up for pennies over the years.
My obsession started when I realised as a small child that my pocket money would go a lot further buying from a jumble sale rather than splashing out at the local toy shop. I'm very pleased that there are still thrifty families out there that think the same way and encourage their offspring to follow in their footsteps.
People today often bemoan the fact that the jumbles of today aren't like those of their youth. Although today's obsession with throwaway fashion often means that the tables are crammed with George at Asda and Primark there are still many great finds to be had (click on my icon and visit my homepage if you need convincing).
Sorry to sound envangelical but jumble sales and second-hand are my enduring passion in life!0 -
Wow, you are a true pro!
Thanks, there are some great tips for newbies jumblers like me.
Am off to look for more jumble sales .....0 -
I've been an avid jumbler for the past 50 years [since I was a youngster]. Over the years have bought some beautiful designer labels. Our local church still holds a good jumble every 3 months with lots of good labels [am currently wearing my very fetching blue with pink rosebuds wynciette nightie, the sort that goes from neck to ankles covering all other extremities on route, that cost the vast sum of 30p]. When DS2 was younger I once got a lovely unworn green/black shot cotton shirt from a jumble, he wore this to a posh nightclub and when he was complimented on his shirt and asked where he got it from, was heard to proudly boast, its a one off my mum got it for me [bless]0

Wow, haven't heard of these for aaaaaaages. Used to love going to these, held in Warley Institute or some church hall. Then it was for the spectacle as much as the bargains - the sudden overboisterous enthusiasm of a bunch of old women, elbowing each other out of the way, crushing around a stall, the shouting, the sudden crash of an unfortunate plate which had got in the way and went falling to the floor with obvious results.
I know it's a bit of a weird thing to get annoyed about, but it used to bug me as a kid, how the people running the stalls would buy up loads of the more interesting stuff themselves before the hall opened:rotfl: seemed to be cheating somehow hehe.
No, don't hear of them now.0 -
Whats the difference between a jumble sale and a car boot sale or are they the same thing?
I can remember going to car boot sales a good ten years back - not been on one for ages! This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine:kisses2: Fiancee of the "lovely" DaveAshton :kisses2:I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine.0 -
My best Jumble Sale buy has to be a pair of fine cotton gloves, I bought when I was about 15 yrs old, for about 20p. I am now 43 and still use them every time I put on a pair of tights or stockings. I have never laddered a pair when putting them on, ever!!! Just think of the money I have saved over the years.
Jumbles Rule!!!keep smiling,
