My 2003 diesel ford focus has coming up for 110,000 on the clock. It's well looked after and is almost as good as the day I rolled her off the forecourt. If I'm feeling particularly flush I may treat her to a new steering wheel at some point, as the leather has worn in places. That's about the grand sum of the issues it has!

Youve got an 07 plated car and your worried about it?

    Ask yourself..

Does it do what you want?
    Are you happy with it?

If so then all you need do is make sure you service it when it needs to be done,in particular make sure it has good quality oil and a proper filter, also keep an eye on the timing belt.

Clios dont get big prices in px anyway.

    100k ? Pah...

My Golf is 92 reg,has 94k on the clock and runs perfectly.
You cant even hear it when driving.....only the tyre/road noise.

It will last you a fair few more miles, but surely something with cruise control should be a better move.

If you want something that looks like a jnr exec car, gives good mpg and is guaranteed to last for years, a Volvo S40D will fit the bill.

Remember, the diesel engine may last longer than an equivilent petrol, but the rest of the car (gearbox, suspension, body, etc) is exactly the same.

Modern cars are generally designed to last about 150,000 miles. (some may still only be 100,000 miles)

No. Gearboxes are tailored for different engines. A diesel gearbox may be stronger to cope with the increase torque from the engine. Suspension can often be different, as diesel engines can often be heavier than their petrol equivalents.

Generally a modern car will last for a period dictated by exactly how well its owner takes care of it. No more, no less.

    Drive it till it dies!

But why are you asking the question? Do you really want a new car? But deep down you know the Clio does the job. Do you really want us to give you permission to go out and buy a new car? Hmmm! Head or heart? What do you follow?

If you don't give a toss about cars, and their "image", keep the Clio. The money you'll save will give you another nice holiday a year.

But on the other hand......that A4 that went past you the other day looked cool. And that 3 Series with the nice alloys the other day........

Sod it we're in a recession, go spend some cash! Help out a struggling dealership..........no maybe not.

Clio till it dies, and put away half the cash you were going to spend on a new car each month, and in 3 or 4 years you'll have a hell of a deposit on the car you really want.
  • Was just going to say that :D 100k on a Diesel and its barely run in.

An 04 plate Mondeo tdci estate went thru BCA the other day with 523,000 miles on it!
Thats over 100,000 a year! Probably ther day shift, the night shift and the inbetween shift have had it...!

Gearbox ratios may be different to allow for the different engine output, but if it's the same type & make of gearbox, it's almost certainly the same apart from different gearing.
Even if it's a completely different gearbox, the vehicle will only have been designed to last 150,000 miles (although just like petrol powered vehicles, some will last significantly longer)

The same goes for suspension. Probably just a different spring and/or shock setting, probably even same manufacturer (if engine mass difference required it). It would be very unusual to have a whole new unique suspension geometry just for diesel powered vehicles.
Again, the vehicle is only tested to 150,000 miles maximum, although they would certainly consider replacing shocks as acceptable even within the test period.

I don't know of any major car manufacturer who designs and tests their diesel cars to a longer period than their equivalent petrol powered cars.

    Looking for some advice!

Currently drive a 57 Plate (Dec 07) Renault Clio 1.5 86 Diesel, which returns 60+mpg and £35 road tax :T

I drive about 30,000 per annum so as my little clio approaches its 2nd birthday its going to have 58k on it, so within 18-20 months will have the dreaded 100k on.

The car is paid in full and likely worth £5-6k, I assume with 100k on it it will be worth £1.5-2k so big loss (unless I'm totally misguided and people will buy a clio 3.5 years old with 100k on for a reasonable amount?)

So...should I part exchange it for something about the same age but more designed for this mileage (BMW 3-5/Audi A3-4/VW <Golf/Merc C) and take the hit on MPG/Road Tax as the depreciation should be less?

If this option ideas for cars which fit would be handy, 23 yr old male driver with 5 years NCB, likely to get company car in a few years and just got 55% payrise so need something which looks the part, 60 mile daily commute including M3/25 (joy!), and 200-300mile trips every 2-3 weeks, no need for kiddies/wardrobe moving so estate not needed.

Or keep the clio and take the big loss in value in return for cheap as chips running costs, I've had a couple of french cars and been happy breakdown wise but 100K on a clio might be pushing it, servicing every 12k is annoying cost too but I do actually like the car and aside from lacking cruise control it's fully specced.

Any and all advice gratefully received...

    Petree

It'll be worth more than 2k, perhaps several hundred to a thousand pounds less than one with average miles, but it won't be worth that little, you probably can't get anything newer than a 1999 mark 2 for that kind of money mate. Most of those are high milers too.

The scrappage scheme has naffed up the second hand prices - i'm having similar worries as i've bought one with the intention to resell in 3 years time, but it's only a little 1.2 and not sure what's going to happen when i trade in 3 years time with 45k on the clock!

    Cheers All,

Lithian - i think a 530 is perhaps a bit too much of a change from 60-70mpg to contemplate at the moment

AdrianHi - Don't think I have the confidence to keep chopping and changing (bought a lemon...once burnt and all that)

Anihilator - thankfully i'm not a sales rep (no offence to any) just a 60ish mile daily commute (16,000 per annum) plus trips to our other sites every few weeks (5k per annum), plus having OH with normal fuel drinking car we take mine on weekends away  should have bought a range rover! :D

Andy - to be honest part is the oooh factor of a nicer car but a merc pretty much saved my life this year, not sure the clio would have, i do have a procurement head though (save, save, save)...

Bossworld - so my 2nd hand value might be shortchanging myself, sounds good!

Think i'll keep it till 3 years and switch over then before I go near MOTs and the like as opposed to worrying about the actual miles on it, if 100-150k is the median I should be fine by the sounds of it (with the odd bit maybe) and then I will have loved it long time :o

2nd Question in that case, the Renault Warranty is till 60k (so gone by Christmas time) would anyone care if I then take it to bob's autos from then on?

    Thanks for the advice,

    Petree
