I used a recipe from the recipe section and tried to make this last night. The texture was horrible, sort of solid and stodgy with a funny taste. Help, what have I done wrong?

What kind of funny taste? I follow a standard 4oz SR flour 4oz sugar 4oz butter two eggs mix. I find cooking marg does not taste nice in micro sponge but ok if steamed so use butter most of the time. Cook until risen but the top should still be slightly moist. Somewhere between 5-8mins depending on how powerful your micro is. HTHLife's a beach! Thanks for that, I think it might be the cooking marg that was making the horrible taste, now you have said that it did have that unpleasant fatty greasy taste. I also only cooked it for 4 minutes which may have made it stodgy instead of more sponge like, didn't do very well there did I!!
I will try it again this evening, now I am desperate for syrup sponge!Loretta0 -
i only tend to make a 2oz mix in the micro, otherwise it has a tendancy to overcook and hard
i would cook a 2oz mix for 3mins, then leave it to stand for about 10mins in the micro (you have to let it rest a while, otherwise the top of the pud is still wet and stodgy). then give it another 30sec -1min to reheat just before eating
ok, youre not going to get the light and fluffy sponge you get with a steamed sponge pud, but for a dessert that takes 5mins to make and cook, it doesnt taste too bad

My recipe is slightly different and works out just fine.
100g each of sugar and marge (if you use butter make sure it's unsalted) creamed together and then add an egg.
200g Self Raising flour mixed in well.
Now add milk a little at a time until you get a soft dropping consistency.
For an 800W microwave cook on high for 5:30 though for your first time you could start skewer tests at 4:45 and you need to stop cooking when the skewer is only slightly damp or only has a couple of bits on it as the sponge will carry on cooking as it rests.
If you save any leftovers in the fridge and they go hard and biscuity it's no porblem - reheating each portion at medium for about 1:40 should make them nice and soft. The reason they went that way is that they were slightly over cooked, so reduce your cooking time by ten seconds on your next one, and so on 'til you get the perfect pud.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I wonder if you might have over-cooked it?
My microwave is 800W and I usually put it on initially for about 31/2 mins on HIGH, and maybe add another 30 seconds if it still looks sticky. Standing time is very important when cooking in the microwave and food will continue to cook for several minutes after it's turned off"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Can anyone please help - I'm sure I got it off here somewhere and have lost (mislaid) it. Its a recipe (dead easy) for a chocolate sponge pudding that you bung in the microwave and when its done the sponge is at the top and a lovely chocolate sauce at the bottom. I did this for my son and a friend a while ago and said friend is coming again at the weekend and has requested it - his Mum says he has raved about it ever since - she apparently never makes anything. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks.I'm not a failure if I don't make it, I'm a success because I :tried!0

I think this may be the recipe you are after.
4oz plain flour, 5 level tbsp cocoa(75ml), 2 level tsp baking powder, pinch salt, 10oz soft light brown sugar, 6 fl oz milk, 2 tbsp veg oil, 1 tsp vanilla (2 oz chopped walnuts, optional). sift flour, 2 tsp (10ml) of the cocoa, baking powder and salt, stir in 4oz of the sugar. Pour in milk, oil and vanilla and beat until smooth. Add nuts if using. Pour into 8 inch round dish. Mix remaining sugar and cocoa together and sprinkle over the batter and pour 12 fl oz boiling water over. microwave on high for 12-14 mins or until top looks dry and sauce is just bubbling through. It will have separated into a light sponge on top and chocolate sauce underneath. quantities for the cocoa sounded a bit odd (75 ml would be 3 tbsps) so I have put this in both mls and spoonfuls.
