I wouldn't normally do this, but The Register have published a fabulous and straightforward guide to HDTV in the UK. It's sort of a buyers guide with all the "gotchas" such as HDTV might look great on an HD TV - but Freeview will look really rubbish....
It's here: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/05/30/hd_buyers_guide_uk/0 -
Interesting article. Sony has been pushing broadcasters very hard to adopt 1080i because its equipment uses it. I guess Sky got an especially good deal from them.
Note that a CRTdisplay does not have a fixed matrix of pixels, unlike LCDs or plasmas, so can display SD and HD "natively", hopefully giving you the best of both worlds (assuming it changes the spot size accordingly). There's life in the old tube yet.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
Eh?
An HD picture may look slightly better on a normal CRT TV than an SD broadcast, but it will only be marginal as a TV only has 625 lines of horizontal resolution.
However, I would agree with you that if a traditional CRT had more lines of resolution, being analogue, the resulting picture could look good.
Samsung are already selling an HD CRT TV: http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/453_324140.html0 -
I am indeed referring to a CRT that is capable of displaying HD resolution, such as the "slim" Samsungs. I believe some of the tubes used in standard TVs are, in theory, HD capable, as well.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0
