Moving into new home soon which we are buying . It has been empty, before that tenants and the owner of the house has died.
How do i find out if the line is active? Can BT tell me if i ring them with the address- don't know what surname it may have been under recently.
How much do they charge for making line active? Do i have to do this with BT? I have a contract for 12 months approx with BT at my current address- can i transfer this to my new address?
Thanks!

If you are buying the house, then either ask the estate agent or go back to the house with a telephone and plug it in.
Make sure you test all the telephone points as your home could be like ours when we bought it. Various points on different lines only 1 line active.Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent

When I am looking at a house I pm the BT reps on here the number and postcode and they do a check. They can do it on the phone too - previous surname is not needed.
It is anout 120 for activation but they have offers on a lot - look in this forum - yes only BT can activate, you can transfer your contract. Remember you need to give them at least 14 days notice for the old address0 -
call BT ( as you stated you are a BT customer) tell them your new address and wait for reply.
If there is a line there connected recently(to BT line or similar) then should be free to take over.
You wont know til you ask.
If a charge is quoted (£122.50) then you can take up a free connection offer with BT but it does come with strings (10 calls a month charged or inclusive)0 -
I had the BT line in our flat switched back on after it had been empty for a few months, and they didn't charge us anything. Just had to wait a few days (they told us exactly when it would be connected) and bingo there it was. They also gave me our new number while arranging the re-connection.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Also tied you into a 12 month contract with BT
Go BT getting it right fot you
Its nice to hear they got it right for you0 -
I don't have any problem with being tied into a 12 month contract with BT, given that you need a BT line anyway for most Broadband, or so I believe. I'm paying £11.25 a month (direct debit and paperless billing) and get free evening and weekend calls - bargain! They also renewed the deal for another 12 months after checking that I was happy with this.

Thanks for your replies- I rang them and they tested the line. Didn't need surname as you said and the line is active- yippee!0
