a new graphics card?

Options
hello im new to the forums but would like to know if anyone could recommend (that spelt right?) a new graphics card to me.

Currrently i have a geforce 5200fx 128mb but am looking to upgrade so i can run two monitors as once, as the current only has the tv outlet as well. I've done some research into what type of card i would need and it seems i will need one a dvi slot so i can attach an adapter for the second monitor. Is that correct?

I had upgraded my graphics card earlier last year to an ati 9800, however i found that while it gave me drastic improvements it also made some of my games crash very frequently, once within a minute of starting so would prefer to stay away from an ati. I was told that it was not the card however but the drivers that made the game crash so frequently, it was very erratic.

Mainly I play video games like counter strike-source and morrowind. I used to play battlefield 2 but had to return that particular card. Im looking for a card that would be able to play oblivion if possible :) but unfortuantly my budget is at best £100.

Any recommendations anyone?

An nVidia GeForce 6600GT, they're usually around the £100 mark. Probably provides the best bang for your buck of any graphics cards available. Very entry level compared with newer cards but back in its day it was (and still is) a very capable card. You (depending upon your cpu/memory spec) should be able to play Battlefield 2 with such a card, and probably Oblivion (I've not played it on PC, got it for the Xbox 360 :), immense game best this year so far).

Best bet is to check places such as https://www.anandtech.com and https://www.tomshardware.com as different manufacturers of the GeForce 6600GT will differ slightly in terms of performance. May as well find out the best of the bunch and go for it to squeeze those extra frames per second out.

sounds like you need to use DriverCleaner.

from what you described, it sounds very much like you had a driver conflict, not a problem with a specific card.

on the gf card front (presuming you're sticking with agp), I'd have to suggest something like ATi X1600Pro 512mb model, OCUK have it for around the £100 mark. 500mhz core clock, ddr2 and 12 pixel pipelines make it fairly decent value.

I'd be able to help more though if you posted some system specs, that way fit a card to your system :)

I had thought completely removed the 5200 drivers before installing the 9800. Though didnt use drivercleaner though...doh

I have the same CPU as you, slightly more RAM and a 6600GT. I got my 660GT as a replacemnt for my dead 9700pro. Its a good card, like wolfman says it will be the best buy if you worked out the performance vs price. It plays BF2 fine, and even quake 4 on quite high detail. Never had a crash with it, doenst conflict, runs quite cool. Good value for money.
