Help with margins please

Options
I am trying to print a booklet (actually it's an order of service for a friend). In view of the amount of text that she wants on it, I need to get as much on a page as I can. I have tried changing the margins but when I print it out the text is still too far down the page and I need to get it right to the top of the page.

Any ideas please ? I'd be really grateful.

Just a suggestion, but have you tried changing the size of the font to a smaller one, in order to fit more on to the page?

You cannot print right to the edges of the paper - top, bottom, left & right. There is an "unprintable" area around the page and this varies according to the printer.

If you are using Word to lay out this document, go to File, Page Setup and set all the margins to "0". Click on OK and Word will tell you that the margins are outside the printable area. Click on "fix" and Word will set the minimum possible margins for the printer concerned.

Make sure that the first paragraph doesn't have a "space before" - click anywhere in the first paragraph, Format, Paragraph ... space before should be "0".

As a general observation, a full page of small closely typed text is really not advisable. It's difficult to read and makes the document look uninviting - is your friend sure she wants this?

I agree with this, but some of the print could perhaps be smaller, for example headings larger than the general smaller print of the paragraph. Makes it more interesting, but at the same time allows more print per page.

I did try that but then it's too small to read and it just seems that once all the text is on (technically it,s 2 A4 sheets folded so it's 8 A5 type pages) there seems to be quite a lot of room at the top of the page as it were. I have tried what you suggested i.e larger headings etc but looks too heavy on the page, I just thought if I could spread it out a bit it wouldn't be so heavy on the eye. Thanks for your help.

I know my canon pixma has the option, mainly for when printing 6x4 photos

you can alter the space in between the lines which is called leading. Im not sure if the leading can be changed in word I use quark & adobe indesign which lets the user have total control over text and spacing.

You could change the font, you'll be surprised how different fonts alter in width.

Also 2 columns per page will make it easier on the eye.
