charged different price then tag

my son brought a coat from river island and was charged 79.99 but when he got home tag says 59.99.
on their web site it says coat is 79.99
if he took it back shop and showed hem tag do you think they'll refund the other 20

  • They should do, they are not permitted to display a low price and charge a higher one.

Yes they are, it is called a "mistake".
As long as it is not deliberate then they have done nothing wrong although some shops will honour the price, they do not have to.
  • The OP hasn't fully outlined the circumstances:

    a) the OP's son was happy to pay £79.99, bought it and then fortuitously discovered the £59.99 tag - bargain!
    b) OP saw it the £59.99, paid but signed his life away with his eyes closed at the till (if it were cash, a bit like throwing a load of £20 notes at the assistant but not knowing how many you'd thrown!) - doh!

I think in this case, its an "a)". (I'm getting quite good on predicting the scores on Strictly too, just need to work on the lottery nos).

If it was a), a certain minority on this forum would say - he's happy to pay the full price, he shouldn't capitalise on the shop's mistake. My view is that the shop is not permitted to charge the higher price on a lower price tag.

Mistakes happen but the shop would be on tricky ground, they'd have to refund and then refuse to resell if they chose not to honour the price.
  • If the price tag had said £79 and the customer had gone to the till expecting to pay £79 and then had been charged only £59, the shop couldn't later demand the extra £20. They could ask for it, but they couldn't enforce payment.

    Cuts both ways.

I would try to get the difference refunded its worth a punt but i don't think you'll get anywhere nor do you have anyright legal right to but hey they may just for good customer service. allthough they'll proberly just say someone switched the cleanernce label this happens a lot. I've caught people doing where I work, people do it then chicken leaving it for the next customer and I've had friends try it on in shops.

Do ALL the coats in the shop say £59.99, or was it just one that had the wrong price tag on?

I would take it back and ask for the difference. If they don't agree, then ask for a full refund and take your custom elsewhere. Or if he really wants THIS coat, then accept it at £79.99.

Still confused how he didn't notice at the time!!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
