Sewing own nappies?

Hi

I have been sewing my own pocket nappies out of stuff around the house (old pajamas, etc) and stuffing them with bought inserts. I have some old towels that I want to make into inserts but i'm not sure what the best way to do it is as I dont have a serger / overlocker. Any suggestions? thanks!

Have you had a look on the 'make your own nappy' websites such as this one www.diaperfabric.com. I remember spending ages with my youngest looking for patterns but can't find my list of websites now . There are loads of others you just need to google.

I'm assuming you do have a sewing machine..... could you not sew around the raw edges in a tight zig zag stitch or sew inside out and then hand stitch the open seam once turned through? Does that make sense - I'm not up on the technical terms :rotfl:.

  • Thanks for that - I'm going to try doing the zigzag around the edge thing but I'm not very good at sewing so am afraid its going to be really ugly... Considering its purpose I guess that doesnt really matter!

Not sure if it's any use, but ikea have hand towels that are 29p each and we used these as nappies, they are a touch smaller than a terry square, but we would do the bow tie fold and secure with a wrap these would be great for stuffing.

Also Amilotte's suggestion of doing them double thickness and sewing the edge, then turning inside out then re-sewing would be very easy and more secure than an overlocker and it looks very neat, though you are right it doesn't matter a jot what they look like.

Good luck with it, and well done you for getting round to it!

ooh another thought is sure start sometimes run sewing courses where you take your own projects along, maybe find your nearest one and enquire as they should have an accomplished seamstress who would give you a hand for freeeee! :)

I make my own nappies- shaped ones rather than pockets, but I do also make inserts to go in my fuzzi buns.

I make the stuffers (inserts) by making them double, sewing round the outside, turning them in the right way, adding one more layer inside the pouch I just made, turn the raw edges in and then sewing them up. I then sew a 'border' around the edge to neaten it up and secure the added layer inside. I make mine with microfibre, but the idea is the same. making reusable wipes is v similar, just leave out the extra bit inside.

I am guessing that that makes no sense to anyone- let me know if you want more useful instructions :)

PS: I have only learnt to use a sewing maching in the past 3 months as I wanted to make things for our first baby due in Feb, so it is really quite easy :)
