floor fitting (laminate and carpets quote)

Hi community,
hope you put your clocks back :)
after years in the country to be with my welsh girl we finally managed to get a little victorian end terrace and finish our renting life.
I am much better working the numbers than at DIY. Dont even want to remember the first paint job I attempted...

I had a quote for the laminate for 3 rooms totalling 43 sqm (measured by a professional but not the fitter vs my estimated vs my 41 sqm).
The total 1380 with no break down. I know the laminate material is 10 p-sqm which would mean labour is 950 so about 22 p-sqm. Sounds a lot and no mention of underlay (victorian floorboards underneath) or beading.

The carpet seems much fairer priced and I expected that to be the harder job due to the quirky stairs going round and I expect a lot of cutting involved to do a good job. The fitting here for the 30 sqm stairs, landing, hallway, is 10 psqm w-o underlay or just under 15 with underlay.

I know prices vary, I am in Warwick Area, and have studied the moneysavingsexpert for laminate fitting quotes and seen as low as 8 p-sqm to 18 p-sqm for laminate.
I dont think the area would warrant a surcharge that high but feel the local building trade has not had the competition from eastern europe bigger places like greater london have seen.

I dont mind paying for a good job but I do loath dishonesty and being taken advantage of. For the quoted laminate fitting (43x22=946 gbp) I am tempted to have another DIY go.

Many Thanks in advance for any feedback, perhaps from the warwick area even.
Have a good Sunday

You are well within your rights to ask for a full break down of what is included in the quote for the flooring, get this in writing to avoid any future disputes. There's no point guessing if things are included as these may suddenly knock up the price as 'extras' further down the line.

If you visit your local allied carpet (or similar) they will be able to tell you how much they charge per square meter for fitting then you can use this for comparison.

Also worth getting other quotes to compare what's on offer.

  • Thanks Clive, thought I go to a local shop to support the local business rather than the big chains, but based on that quote will have to do that.

Also, as you suggested have started to get other quotes, that price is just too high even if it does include say underlay, threshold boards, beading. Still it is all local :) a good offer in Liverpool is no good to me.

    Thanks

    Hi,

As a laminate fitter (birmingham area ) and as a guide I charge around £9/10 per square metre fitting, if i was to travel further away. I only usually recommend Quickstep flooring, and timbermate excel gold underlay... 43 sq metres using a 800 quickstep with bead and door trims would be around £1050 (without seeing job, could be a little more with radiator profiles etc)

    hope that helps :)
  • Thanks that does give an indication, we picked a hardwaring but not expensive laminat at 10pound/sqm and I have read only good about 5mm fibre underlay and expected labour to be around the mark you mention. A second quote is also much lower (as clive suggested) and actually so low I wonder if a good job can be done...will check references.

    Thanks again

I went to Carpetright for a quote for a carpet... ok not wooden flooring. They said they charged £xx for delivery, £xx for laying the carpet then an £xx surcharge.

It didn't occur to me until I left to ask what the surcharge was for!!
