Yes I saved over £200, but using a Cash Back site would have cost me more!

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I now have two experiences of using a cash back site and being charged a higher price than going direct!!!

Example 1: Small additional cost:
Although a small amount of money, just by chance, I found that when I wanted to buy a CD from a well known CD supplier and a well known cash back site, I would have gained a 50p return spending £10.99. However, when I went direct to the CD site in error, the same CD was only £9.99. Okay, I can understand why this is, but a bit underhand I think.

Example 2: Huge difference in price:
Going through a comparison site for motor insurance, my policy would have been £211. When I tried going through a cash back site to the same company, using the exact same details, the policy would have cost me £436 with a £20 return. Now then, I think that is darn right outrageous.

Anybody have the same experience?

.
 Can anyone explain to me how to put a signature here?

that's really shocking in a completely non surprising way :rotfl:
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine
  • I just checked Rpoints and they say this will 'absolutely not' happen: http://www.rpoints.com/help/1/24/

My car insurance is due soon so will try with and without cashback sites and see if there is a difference!

This is the comparison site not particularly the cashback site. Comparison sites leverage a discount from the insurers...similar to what you might get from a cashback site to hook you in...
  • I think the general rule is to treat cashback as a bonus, not a given.

I don't understand how this could be possible. If you went to the same insurer with the same details the quote would be the same, you don't pay the comparison site or the cashback site for your insurance, you pay the insurance company.

Are you sure it wasn't the same quote you were actually looking at, but for example the comparison site may have no claims protection included or something along those lines?

Once a motor insurance company has your details, no matter how you initially access there site, they usually save your quote for 30 days, so if you did enter the same details all be it from two different sources it will have still got you the same result, unless something had changed on your policy.

This happened to me when I was younger getting my first insurance I phoned the national 0800 number for a well know insurance company and got quoted £2005.00 I wrang around everwhere to get the best deal and then finally went into the local office of the same insurance company to my absoloute delight they quoted me £1195.00 on the same car all the same details I had given them on the phone, at the time I thought they had made a huge error so I diddnt say anything and took out the insurance.

That was about 11yrs ago though, so im not sure if they where all linked back then. but yes it does happen

i have to say insurance comparison sites vary widely compared to going direct to the insurers website, i use the comparison site find the 3 cheapest then go direct to their websites, usually 2 out of the 3 are cheaper than the comparison site and the third is more expensive
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

    greattt jobb
  • I usually shop around the cashback sites - and go direct as well. Found that way you cover all bases and get the best deal.

Still, probably spend what I try and save on the electricty!
