I've actually heard of this happening once before. At certain times of the day someone was hearing what sounded like german voices in his speakers. The reason for it was when he was setting up his surround sound system, the provided cables weren't long enough so he got some longer cables. The longer cables were unshielding, and he effectivly turned his speaker system into a very expensive crystal radio.

Thanks for all the replies. I've not noticed the voices when the PC is off but will keep an ear open for this. We are in the countryside but about 2 miles away, there's a mobile phone mast on a hill. Perhaps this is the cause of it all?

I've had the same problem ...maybe not the German voices ... but certainly bits and pieces of unintelligible radio conversations, did freak me out for a short while in the middle of night!!! Speaker systems can become "a radio set". Probable cause is a local "Radio HAM", local taxi co or a truckers CB etc.

Check out your neighbours roofs/back gardens for any unusual aerials. If you find out who it is let him know your problem ... usually these guys like solving these sort of problems!!!! (maybe!!!)

Occurs mainly at night because of the F-layer or something in the ionsphere (I think???) which acts as a mirror for radio signals. So the source of your problem may end up not being "local". These signals can bounce around the world in a technique called hopping see

    for more info on this.

Most likely a local HAM, then I would say as the voices are "German" then I would say it could be a radio HAM in Germany using this "hopping and skipping" technique to transmit further at night.

Strongest effects will be in the early hours b4 dawn.
