National savings bank - old post office based savings, how do I access?

Hi all,
I have just been given the book for a savings account which my parents set up some 25 years ago but has been dormant for some time now. It is an 'Investment account' with the 'national savings bank' - it was done through the post office. The local office looked at me although I had 3 heads so I am unsure how to proceed! There is not a fortune in there but more than enough that I would like to get hold of it - has anyone any ideas?!
Thanks!
Adam

Edit: This is even better! It has an image of a Post Office Savings Bank book.
