Will my credit history be damaged?

in Credit cards
Hi,
I've just got a new current account with Alliance and Leicester and some how I have asked them to put an application in for their Santander credit card at the same time.
I received a letter saying that I have been declined etc. First off, will this failed application be on my credit history and make me look bad to future lenders etc.
Also, I'm not sure why I was declined. Here is my situation, I am a University student with 2 credit cards with about £3000 of available credit. I am in no debt at all. I have recently started a part time job that pays around £600-700 a month. Sure I look fairly liquid to them?
I'm only really worried if my credit history has been damaged, as I've been a perfect customer all my life with no late payments, no bad debt, no overdrawn accounts etc.
Any advice would be great.
Cheers

A record will have been made of the search, but not of the decline.
Remember that banks are cautious with lending at the moment - a student with a new part time job isn't the best of risks, regardless of history.0
