USB External Hard Drive 1tb

Hi I want to buy a 1tb USB external hard drive. I have done some research and found the cheapest to be at 7dayshop for a Freecom XS USB 2.0 External Hard Disk Drive - 1000GB (1TB) at £74.99

I will be plugging it into my wireless router in the cupboard and leaving it on so that time machine can do auto back ups.

The one above does not have an internal fan, as the drive will be left plugged in and left on do you see this as a problem?

Any other things I should be considering or models I should be looking at?

Cheers Alison. [FONT=Tahoma, Verdana, Arial]

You can get them at PC World and Tesco for £64.99 ( or less if you look for voucher codes ) if they are on offer. You try the likes of scan.co.uk, novatech.co.uk or dabs.com, who have drives starting at about £64 with free postage. ( I'd look for one with more cache though, for instance Dabs )

I bought an Iomega 1TB drive a couple of months ago ( it contains a Samsung drive ) and have had it on for many hours most days. It doesn't have a fan, just vents on either side, but is barely warm to the touch.

Forget the cooling for the moment, shouldn't you be buying a NAS drive? e.g. here and not a USB drive.

No. Not if she's using a Mac - which would appear to be the case, since she's using Time Machine (which is part of Mac OS X).

Apple uses file protocols that cause problems with NAS devices.

It's better just to attach a simple USB2 drive, formatted in "HFS+ (Journaled)" to the Mac or to a router that supports USB2 (ideally, for total compatibility, an Apple Airport Extreme) or else use a spare old Mac as a network, file and printer server, via Ethernet (very preferably Gigabit).

Your suggestion would, of course, be wise for a Windows computer. :)

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

the WD MyBook automatically powers down when not in use - that would be a better option than leaving it running 24/7 IMO

Check out Robert Dyas if you have one locally. Or look online.

I know that they are not well know for computer accessories but I did notice yesterday that my local store had Verbatim 1tb and 1.5tb USB enclosures and drives for about £50 and £65 respectively. I don't know if they have fans or not.

I can’t be sure those are the exact prices as I was just casually browsing. I do remember thinking that they looked to be a bargain. They also had some bargains in memory sticks.

Also try Ebay but be cautious unless you are experienced at buying there.
  • Ummm... was espresso not more wondering about how you would actually plug it into the router??? Because it doesn't appear to have a LAN port to plug it into your router. Hence the reason you would need a network drive.

Yes I am using a mac and an Apple Airport Extreme.

I like the sound of the WD powering down, I presume it would just power up again automatically once time machine 'did it's thing'.

Thanks for all of your replies.

Yes he probably was as I didn't make it clear that I was using a mac with an Airport Extreme where you can plug in an external using a USB 2.
