Bombarded by telephone calls from credit card co's

 My husband (who is not working) has missed payments from credit cards and has been bombarded by telephone calls from the company's for each of his credit cards.

These company's are fully aware of the situation but continuously call him on a daily basis. He has explained that he has no money to pay them etc... and now also given them the number from CCCS (he has an appt with them on 02/11). We have learnt that these company's work on an automated telesystems where they don't even know the name of the person they are calling until we pick up the phone & they cannot stop this?!

It is driving us mad - we've even had to pull the plug out so we can't hear the phone & if we do answer it, we just put the phone down if it is not someone we know. We have calls as early as 8:15am (even on Sunday!) & as late as 9pm!

Surely this is harassment!? We cannot give them what we do NOT have!

Anyone have any tips or going through the same thing?

  • If you do not answer the telephone at all then they are entitled to think that perhaps you are out most of the day and that they need to see if you are in early in the morning, late at night or over the weekend.

On the other hand if you answer their call and explain your situation then subsequent calls from the same company might be construed as being harassment.

  • There is a letter you can send just write to the and tell you only want to comunicated via post.
  • As bingy says, there are letters you can use to write to them, and these also include references to the Protection from Harassment Act for companies doing this.

I'd recommend following bingy's advice as you and/or he have told them what the situation is. Did you contact them when your husband ran into difficulties to come to an alternate arrangement?
  • Thank you guys. Yes they are fully aware of our situ, so I will have to start sending some letters, because this is harrassment and certainly not helping with the stress.

My husband answers them during the day, but we turn the phone off in the evening now when the calls start.

The company's just say they can't stop the calls, but surely they can, especially if they receive letters from customers re harrassment.

    Thanks again.

Might be a bit of hassle but have you thought of changing your phone number and having it ex directory..?.
  • is this by any chance calls from the halifax??? we went through exactly the same thing they would ring at 8am EVERY morning without fail and ask the same question and be told the same thing, we had a payment arrangement set up with them and they still called us every single day

we sent them a letter saying it was harrasment and luckily it stopped so fingers crossed for you you will be rid of them soon :)
