The 3000 series does not take DDR2, it takes DDR. Perhaps you coud post the link to the Crucial part no that you ordered, this might resolve the confusion.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I have physically examined the laptop myself and there is definitely only one slot which contains a DDR2 card and the Crucial site says there should be two slots for DDR type memory so perhaps I have misquoted the Acer model number in the OP. Or perhaps I wrote down DDR2 wrongly. I won’t know until I can examine the laptop again.

I bought the Crucial 1gb DDR2 card second hand on ebay for £5. I didn't go direct to Crucial as they charge £30 for a new card. I never buy new if the same thing is available on Ebay.

I have bought quite a few used memory modules, disks etc before on ebay and this is the first time I have had a problem. I have saved quite a few hundred pounds over the last few years so the small amount of time and money wasted on this is of little consequence overall.

I’ll sort it out next time I have the laptop in front of me and, if I have bought the wrong memory, I’ll relist it on Ebay and get my money back. I’ll probably make a small profit. I trade regularly on ebay, usually guitars and other musical items, and I usually sell for far more than I buy at.

Thanks everyone for your advice. There is probably nothing more to be said until I can check the laptop again.

You've written that you have 'identified' the problem. So what was it?

The problem is that (unless Crucial have it wrong, which I doubt), the OP has wrongly identified the laptop as a Series 3000. If the existing slot is DDR2, and the new one he has bought won't fit, then logically it must be DDR. Seems to me that must be the case, since there is only one slot.
Or the other way around possibly...

I think it's obvious what the problem was... it was DDR all along and he bought the wrong RAM.

If it wasn't that, then he would have told us what the problem was :D

I don't know but there was little point continuing to go around in circles until I have examined the laptop again to establish if I made a mistake or if there is some unusual problem. I amended the title to avoid anyone else jumping in and repeating all the advice and comments already given.

!!!!!! is humiliating about not being an expert on laptop memory or making a simple error, if indeed that is what has happened.:confused::confused:

This is just a techy forum where people ask questions and seek help and advice.

Go and stick your head back up your arris where it belongs. :D

PS: What is humiliating is buying a "Leather Manager's Chair from Argos". ;)

And even more humiliating is having such a fat arris that you wear it out in a few weeks. :rotfl:

Now I can see how you ordered the wrong RAM. You can't read. :D

As I stated in that thread, I am an ordinary sized fella. I'm not fat. And the chair lasted a few months, not weeks as you put it, before the netting split because it wasn't durable and was of a bad design...

Now, stalker :D, what made you search through my previous posts? That's a bit weird of you!
