incorrect date on NIP

My father recieved a letter (NIP) from West Yorkshire police today.
It's a speeding offence. The date of offence in NIP states 10/10/09. Now we know the car wasn't anywhere near there on that date - it was at home.
The location and time of offence, however, is correct. The offence actually occurred on 18/10/09.
I've been online to check the evidence and the Gatso photo evidence shows 18/10/09.
So basically, offence actually took place on 18/10/09, which can also be seen in photo evidence. The date of offence stated on NIP is 10/10/09 (incorrect).
What's best course of action to take now (havn't replied yet, as just rec'd it today). Would the NIP still stand? Should he contact them? What shou;ld he write on the back of NIP where it asks for details?

I am assuming for the time being that your father is the Registered Keeper of the vehicle?
Do nothing until 14 days have elapsed from the correct date of the offence.
Then you can contact West Yorks Police and tell them that the NIP contains the wrong date.
As a NIP must be served on the RK within 14 days of the offence, and cannot be amended (ie a fresh one must be served), once the 14 days have expired, they cannot issue a valid NIP for the offence.
Keep copies of any documents that you send to the police.
Be warned that they probably will send a new NIP out and try and convince your father that it's complete valid. But it won't be.
ETA: After the 14 days are up, your father will need to complete and return the S172 notice that he's received, saying that the vehicle was on the drive on the 10th. Otherwise, he could find himself receiving a summons for failing to provide the information!0
