Advice - Changing Night Storage to Central Heating

Hello.
I was just wondering if anybody has changed their heating from night storage to central heating.
We have night storage but dont use it as we dont feel any benefit from it at all!
Gas would have to be brought in from the road and we would be looking at 4 or 5 radiators and completely removing the night storage and radiators. My dad suggested having a Kombi boiler.
Does anybody know an approx cost to have this done?
Many thanks

I'm not entirely up on how night storage heaters work - hot bricks or some such madness? So I would imagine you'e basically looking at an entire brand new heating system, with a load of night storage heaters (which are mighty heavy) to remove.
Cost wise, depends on the size of the house, how many radiators, what brand of radiators, whether you have copper piping or plastic flexi piping, and finally the brand and model of Combi boiler you go for.
I suppose a vague guide would be somewhere in the region of £3k-4k all in, assuming a 3 bed house, around 7 Stelrad radiators, plastic flex piping with copper tails to boiler and radiator, new Worcester boiler and all labour to install. Plus the costs of removing the existing night storage heaters - skip or similar presumably which would add another £100 ish.
Having a new gas supply installed is no issue - if memory serves I think mine was around £500 for Wales and west to dig a mighty hole in the road and another by the front door and hook the new gas line up to the new meter supplied by EDF. Bear in mind you'll have to do a little co-ordination to get a new meter (should be free of charge supplied by the energy company of your choice) installed and the gas line hooked up. There can also be a long delay between applying for a new gas line connection to the grid, sometimes up to a couple of months, so factor that into your time line.0 -
Hi Matt
This is exactly what I've just had done. I had a new gas supply bought to my flat at a cost of £400 from Southern gas networks (this price varies depending on the company)
I then had a 30 kw Ideal Logic Plus combi boiler and six rads fitted at a cost of £3100 with £500 taken off from a government grant for changing from electric heating to gas (I work and do not receive any benefits etc, this grant IS open to all) Overall I paid £2600 for the heating install which i think is a bargain, work has been carried out excellently as well. I went with Stelrad Softline rads, the nicest I saw within budget.
Hope this helps, let me know if I can be of further assistance!0 -
We live in PB 2 bed flats. The flats were built with Elvaco Heating, which is electric wall heaters and a fan unit in the kitchen cupboard which pipes air though pipes under the floor to each of the wall heaters. Each room has its own thermostat. There are two double sized heater in the lounge/diner, one double heater in the larger bedroom and one single heater in each of the hall and other bedroom.
Our neighbour below us had gas central heating installed, the heaters and fan unit removed also the cold storage tank and hot water (with immersion heater) cylinder below. There was a combination boiler fitted and rads of course, in all rooms apart from kitchen, a wireless room stat, usual timer. Cost £5k. It was done by British Gas.
No heavy storage heaters to move of course.0 -

Hi, we would also like to switch from storage heaters to central heating. It's going to cost us over £600 to get the gas connection to the property.
I would also like to know more about a possible grant towards this...from the websites I've checked grants only seem to be available to people on benefits?0
