UPS Charges

Hi Guys
I am looking for help/guidance. (Sorry if I have posted in the wrong area !)
I had an item delivered by UPS aprx 2 weeks ago, it was a gift for my daughters birthday that had been sent from the states. When the driver turned up, he asked me to sign for the item, I asked if there were any charges on it before I took delivery & he said "no!, it makes a change as it came from the states!!" So I signed for it, took it in & discarded the outer packaging, anyway two days ago I had a card pushed thru the door saying I owed £15.56 & he would try again, funny thing was he never knocked the door & he never hung around!!! I called the number on the back of the card, they said he would try again!! Driver hasn't come back, reason being I know this I have been here as my two daughters haven't been well & we haven't gone out!! Last nite at 1555 I get a call from UPS saying that the driver has been unable to collect & they are ringing for an outstanding payment!, I query this, the operator says that it was from the item I signed for 2 weeks ago! I explained that I queried at the time with the driver if there where any outstanding charges & he said "No, It makes a change as it came from the states!!!!" She replied well in fairness the driver wouldn't know! And its one that has slipped through the net!!! Have you got a credit card? You need to make a payment!"
The reason in posting is I think its unfair to ask for payment on an item that has been sent to us that is valued at aprx $40 when at the time of delivery I was told no payment. To ask two weeks after, when I can't send it back unfair!!!! (I would send it back my daughters god parents are coming over in 2 weeks)
Maybe its me??? but I would like to know if its common practice that UPS do this ???
I am more angry that I asked the question if I owed anything & I was told no & when ups called me on friday "it was one that had slipped throught the net!!!!" & she called me 5 minutes before that department closes at 1600!!!!
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks

The delivery guy was probably just embrassed to ask for it. They are human after all. My postman has delivered stuff before where it has been sent underpaid and they want extra stuff but never asks for the money apart from one time I was out and he left a card saying I had to collect it because it was underpaid and the delivery office staff demanded the money.
I would write a letter to UPS complaining about the fact the money was demanded after it was delivered and see what they say.0 -
What is the additional charge for as a matter of interest? Presumably a clearance/customs fee of somekind?
What was the arranged method of forwarding the package from the states - if it was door to door then the delivery should have been covered so it can only relate to an additional clearance fee which UPS should clarify fully on appropriate paperwork to confirm how the charge is made up.
Certainly UPS should have notified this either prior to delivery or at the time of actual delivery.
I don't think you can blame the driver for not knowing about the outstanding cost but I suspect he'll be more careful in future when answering similar enquiries.
If you still feel aggrieved, especially if they don't provide more detailed documentation on the additional charge, then I would suggest writing to someone in higher authority at UPS to highlight their poor performance and lack of customer service, i.e. the assumption you will pay on immediate demand, particularly as it follows an operational error on their part!
Good luck!0 -
Thank you everyone for your help re UPS charges. I am slightly confused I have called UPS - I believe it is the call centre? I went thru to? and gave them the ref number on the card the driver left & I was told that there was no details, but if the driver was to deliver a parcel he would retry another 2 times! I explain that someone from UPS had called & said that I owed UPS money from outstanding charges, can they confirm it? the advisor say that they couldn't ! I said that the reason I was calling was to find out what I was being charged for & could I have the approriate paperwork to clarify this ? The advisor didn't know what I was talking about this was at the beginning of last week. Anyway today I get a call at 1555 from UPS? they left a message & a 01782 number so I called it, the lady I needed to speak to finishes work everyday at 1600, I asked if they could assist me & give me a break down on the charges, & could I send a cheque to UPS, as I don't feel comfortable giving debit card details out, I know this is probably silly of me but they told me it was debit card payments only ! Why the UPS driver couldn't collect a cheque they said no payment over the phone only ! What I can't understand is UPS driver can out on Wednesday last week, I said to him about the charges & he said that he collects payment when he delivers or he doesn't leave the parcel. He hadn't a clue about collecting a payment! He was the original driver who brought my package!!!!
Any advice is grateful.
I hope I make sense, but I am confused!
Many thanks

Firstly I think you should insist on getting clarification on the charges, I mean I wouldnt pay for something without knowing what it's actually for even if you know it relates to a dlvd package.
Once your satisfied that the charges are legit then I would settle payment but whether they can force you to pay by Debit Card I 'm not sure? Besides, you have the pkg so if they want an outstanding payment then they ought to accept your terms on payment method imo.0
