How much does it cost to sell on Amazon. When I signed up I am sure it said the fees are per item.
I have just sold my first item for £3.85, looked at my account and found that I owe Amazon £28.75

What sort of account did you open? Basic ones you pay a fee on each item sold, but others you pay a subscription. It sounds like you signed up for a Pro merchant account which is £28.75 a month link HERE0 -
I agree £28.75 is pro merchant, I'd phone Amazon ASAP and see if you can't persuade them that you signed up by accident.
