Credit/Debit Card Fraud - PLEASE be vigilant!!!!

Good evening

Just a reminder to everyone to PLEASE check your statements on a regular basis. I am extremely careful with my online banking and card security, shredding statements, never giving out my details or clicking on a link in an email etc. However, I logged onto my Nationwide flexaccount this evening to find 3 unauthorised transactions totalling over £260 on my account.:mad::mad: I immediately phoned Nationwide who confirmed that there was another 22 pending transactions that have hit my account, totalling approx £2k, covering both the uk and abroad!:eek::eek:

So even if you're doing everything you possibly can to protect yourself from credit/debit card fraud, please check your accounts on a regular basis!

Izzie

Surely there must have been something you did that lead to your card being comromised? Where did you use it? I do all the things i need to do to protect my card details & have never once been a victim of online card fraud, i pay all my bills online and buy all my shopping online. What websites have you been entering your card details on?

I've used my card online once in the past 2 months, on an "apparently" secure, well known website. I have 2 accounts with the same bank, the second is now showing a difference between my balance and available credit of £1, a transaction that I have not authorised. The first transaction that caused concern for the bank on my other (compromised) account was also for £1. Too much of a co-incidence in my book.

I'm off to phone the bank about that account now too.:mad:

Izzy Wzzy - for all victims of fraud you really have to ask your card issuer or lender how the fraud was perpetrated. You should establish if your PIN was used with a cloned (or valid card) and has been compromised or if it’s your card details that were used. You can then take the appropriate steps to further protect yourself.

Tips on Reducing Personal risk & cost.

A reminder to being vigilant is really good advice. It means if you’re quick enough to spot a fraudulent transaction you can contact your card issuer immediately and have the card (sl) blocked immediately.

This is also true for being vigilant with your credit files. If you spot someone else has taken out a credit card or loan, you can then start the long process of putting things right to clear your name.

Tips to reduce the RISK of picking up the cost of fraud and to protect yourself from ID theft:

    1. If you never use your Credit Cards to make cash withdrawals, considering replacing your Chip & PIN Cards with CHIP & SIGNATURE. Using a Chip & Signature Card means crooks can never ‘capture your PIN’ and use it with your genuine card if it’s stolen (or borrowed), or the PIN used with a cloned card at ATM’s world-wide. You will never have to explain how a crook got hold of your PIN if you don’t have one, therefore you won’t be held liable for PIN based fraud.

    2. Consider using the only real proactive system to deter someone using your personal detais to apply for loans, cards, or open banks accounts etc. Further advantages of the proactive system are: There are no passwords or PINs to forget or compromise. The system reaches ALL lenders, plus it's the cheapest on the market, enrolment is Free.

  • Thanks James

Only my card number was compromised, luckily the card wasn't cloned with the PIN and as I check my account every couple of days I was able to spot it relatively early.

I'm paranoid about keeping my details secure. However, I'll be checking my account daily from now on!

Thanks for the valuable input :)
