Debit/Credit Card Fraud - PLEASE be vigilant!!

Good evening

Just a reminder to everyone to PLEASE check your statements on a regular basis. I am extremely careful with my online banking and card security, shredding statements, never giving out my details or clicking on a link in an email etc. However, I logged onto my Nationwide flexaccount this evening to find 3 unauthorised transactions totalling over £260 on my account.:mad::mad: I immediately phoned Nationwide who confirmed that there was another 22 pending transactions that have hit my account, totalling approx £2k, covering both the uk and abroad!:eek::eek:

So even if you're doing everything you possibly can to protect yourself from credit/debit card fraud, please check your accounts on a regular basis!

  • Must have been pretty scary for you. I hope you manage to sort it out and it doesn't cause you too much inconvenience.

Thanks - yes it was a bit of a shock to say the least. Nationwide were pretty on the ball and are sorting it out for me.

But it does make you wonder how secure these internet sites really are!

Hope you get it your money back asap.

Did you notice on your statment if the fraudulent transactions were 'cash' withdrawals or internet transactions? If you didn't notice, did Nationwide tell you how the crime was perpetrated? For example did they say it was your card details that were used, or did they say that your card was cloned and used with your PIN at ATM's home and abroad?

I think it's important you know for several reasons.

If it were Internet transactions your details could have been obtained anywhere, by numerous means. In this case all you can do is get a new card and account number and remain vigilant.

If your card was cloned and PIN used then you should get a new CARD and either change your PIN (as it's been compromised) or get yourself a Chip & Signature Card.

    Good luck.

    Hi James

    Thanks - so do I!

Nationwide confirmed that all transactions were "cardholder not present" so either internet or telephone based transactions using my card number. I logged onto my account to check my balance, to find the transactions on my statement.

Scary stuff after an already stressful week!!
